Abstract
Embodiments are directed towards a support structure for electronic displays with a counterweight that is directed towards maintaining a center of gravity for the support structure, display, and counterweight over the support structure. Embodiments further disclose mechanisms for indirectly coupling the display and providing for counterweight rotations.
Claims
exact text as granted — not AI-modified1 . An apparatus usable to support a computer display device, the apparatus comprising:
a base having a bottom portion and an attached elevated support member; a display arm having a first end that is pivotally connected to the elevated support member; and a counterweight arm having a first end that is pivotally connected to the elevated support member so that when the display arm is pivoted about the base, the counterweight arm pivots about the base to counterbalance a mass associated with at least the display arm thereby maintaining a center of mass of the apparatus over the base and minimizing a likelihood that the apparatus becomes unbalanced.
2 . The apparatus of claim 1 , wherein the display arm and the counterweight arm are rigidly connected to each other at a same fulcrum point located on the elevated support member.
3 . The apparatus of claim 1 , wherein the display arm and the counterweight arm are pivotally connected to the elevated support member at different pivot locations, and wherein the display arm and the counterweight arm are indirectly coupled with one or more pulleys that are wrapped by and rigidly coupled with a belt, such that a pivotal rotation of the display arm causes the counterweight arm to also pivotally rotate.
4 . The apparatus of claim 1 , further comprising:
a first gear that is connected to the first end of the display arm and is rotationally attached to the elevated support member at a first location; and a second gear that is connected to the first end of the counterweight arm and is rotationally attached to the elevated support member at a second location such that the first gear and the second gear are rotationally mesh in a manner that when the display arm is pivotally rotated the first gear is rotated causing the second gear to rotate resulting in the counterweight arm to pivotally rotate.
5 . A support structure, comprising:
a computer display device; a base having a bottom portion and an attached elevated support member; a display arm having a first end that is pivotally connected to the elevated support member and a second end that is coupled to the computer display device; and a counterweight arm having a first end that is pivotally connected to the elevated support member in a manner that when the display arm is pivoted about the base, the counterweight arm pivots about the base to counterbalance a mass associated with at least the display arm and the computer display device to maintain a center of mass of the apparatus over the base and to minimize a likelihood that the apparatus becomes unbalanced.
6 . The support structure of claim 5 , further comprising:
a first gear that is connected to the first end of the display arm and is rotationally attached to the elevated support member at a first location; and a second gear that is connected to the first end of the counterweight arm and is rotationally attached to the elevated support member at a second location such that the first gear and the second gear are rotationally mesh in a manner that when the display arm is pivotally rotated, the first gear is rotated causing the second gear to rotate resulting in the counterweight arm to pivotally rotate.

The support structure of claim 5 , wherein rotation of the first gear in a first direction causes the second gear to rotate in a second direction opposite to the rotation of the first gear, such that when the display arm is lowered towards the bottom portion of the base, the counterweight arm is raised away from the bottom portion of the base.
8 . The support structure of claim 5 , further comprising:
a display holder that is pivotally attached to the second end of the display arm and configured to detachably hold the computer display device; and a lever and a cable configuration attached at least to the display holder to lock the display holder and the computer display device in a selectable configuration about the second end of the display arm, and to further lock the display arm in a selectable position relative to the elevated support member.
9 . A method of constructing an apparatus useable in supporting a display device, the method comprising:
constructing a base assembly having a bottom portion and an attached elevated support member; connecting to the elevated support member a display arm having a first end and a second end, the first end of the display arm being pivotally connected to the elevated support member and the second end being configured to couple to the display device; and connecting to the elevated support member a counterweight arm having a first end and a second end, the second end being connected to a counterweight, and the first end of the counterweight arm being pivotally connected to the elevated support member in a manner that when the display arm is pivoted about the base, the counterweight arm pivots about the base to counterbalance a mass associated with at least the display arm and computer display device to maintain a center of mass of the apparatus over the base and to minimize a likelihood that the apparatus becomes unbalanced.
10 . The method of claim 9 , further comprising:
coupling to the display arm at a second end of the display arm a display mount arm having a first end that is pivotally coupled to the display arm at a second end of the display arm; attaching a cable having a first end to the elevated support member; and attaching a second end of the cable to the first end of the display mount arm, such that when the display arm is lowered towards the bottom portion of the base, a torque is imparted onto the display mount arm forcing the display mount arm to rotate about a pivot point at the first end of the display mount arm and to tilt the display mount arm away from the base such that a display screen on a computer display device is enabled to be repositioned from a vertical position to a horizontal position.
11 . The method of claim 9 , wherein the counterweight is further manufactured to be a hollowed counterweight that is configured to be filled with a substance to add mass to the counterweight.
12 . The method of claim 9 , wherein the display device is permanently coupled to the display arm using a display mount arm.
13 . An apparatus usable to support a computer display device, the apparatus comprising:
a base having a bottom portion and an attached elevated support member; a display arm having a first end that is pivotally connected to the elevated support member and a second end that is pivotally attached to a display mount; one of a cable or second display arm having a first end that is pivotally connected to the elevated support member and a second end that is attached to the display mount; and a counterweight arm having a first end that is pivotally connected to the elevated support member so that when the display arm is pivoted about the base, the display mount is pivoted about the second end of the display arm by a torque induced by one of the cable or second display arm, and the counterweight arm pivots about the base to counterbalance a mass associated with at least the display arm thereby maintaining a center of mass of the apparatus over the base and minimizing a likelihood that the apparatus becomes unbalanced.Join the waitlist — get patent alerts
