Abstract
A deep throat chuck jaw system adapted to be used with a lathe with or without a headstock hole is provided. The system includes a set of jaw extension members having an inboard end supported from a face of a master chuck jaw coupled to a lathe chuck. The jaw extension members also include an outboard end. The set of jaw extension members are operable to grip an outer surface of a part having an outer diameter greater than the headstock hole with a clamping assembly clamped around the outboard end.
Claims
exact text as granted — not AI-modifiedWhat is claimed is:
1 . A system for use with a lathe with a headstock hole comprising:
a set of jaw extension members having an inboard end supported from a face of a master chuck jaw coupled to a lathe chuck and an outboard end, the set of jaw extension members being operable to grip an outer surface of a part having an outer diameter greater than the headstock hole; and a clamping assembly operable to clamp around the outboard end.
2 . The system of claim 1 , wherein the outboard end includes a tab.
3 . The system of claim 2 , wherein each of the jaw extension members includes an extension arm having a base adapted to have coupled thereto an inboard machineable soft jaw and an outboard machineable soft jaw, and wherein the outboard machineable soft jaw includes the tab.
4 . The system of claim 3 wherein each said outboard machineable soft jaw includes a bottom surface oriented toward an outer circumferential surface of the part, wherein the bottom surface is concaved to track a curvature of the outer circumferential surface of the part.
5 . The system of claim 2 , wherein each of the jaw extension members includes an elongated machineable soft jaw having the outboard end which includes the tab.
6 . The system of claim 5 , wherein a length of the elongated machineable soft jaw determines a distance of the outboard end from a face of the lathe chuck.
7 . A system for use with a lathe without a headstock hole comprising:
a set of jaw extension members having an inboard end supported from a face of a master chuck jaw coupled to a lathe chuck and an outboard end, the set of jaw extension members being operable to grip an outer surface of a part having an outer diameter less than an outer diameter of the lathe chuck; and a clamping assembly operable to clamp around the outboard end without any other outboard support to support the part.
8 . The system of claim 7 , wherein the outboard end includes a tab.
9 . The system of claim 8 , wherein each of the jaw extension members includes an extension arm having a base adapted to have coupled thereto an inboard machineable soft jaw and an outboard machineable soft jaw, and wherein the outboard machineable soft jaw includes the tab.
10 . The system of claim 9 wherein each said outboard machineable soft jaw includes a bottom surface oriented toward an outer circumferential surface of the part, wherein the bottom surface is concaved to track a curvature of the outer circumferential surface of the part.
11 . The system of claim 8 , wherein each of the jaw extension members includes an elongated machineable soft jaw having the outboard end which includes the tab.
12 . The system of claim 11 , wherein a length of the elongated machineable soft jaw determines a distance of the outboard end from a face of the lathe chuck.
13 . A system comprising:
means for gripping an outer surface of a part having an outer diameter greater than a headstock hole and adapted to be coupled from an inbound end to a face of a master chuck jaw coupled to a lathe chuck; and means for clamping around an outboard end of the gripping means.
14 . The system of claim 13 , wherein the outboard end includes a tab.
15 . The system of claim 14 , wherein the gripping means comprises a set of jaw extension members, each of the jaw extension members includes an extension arm having a base adapted to have coupled thereto an inboard machineable soft jaw and an outboard machineable soft jaw, and wherein the outboard machineable soft jaw includes the tab.
16 . The system of claim 15 , wherein a length of the extension arm determines a distance of the outboard end from a face of the lathe chuck.
17 . The system of claim 16 , wherein a length of the part is longer than a length of the extension arm.
18 . The system of claim 14 , wherein the gripping means comprises a set of jaw extension members, each of the jaw extension members includes parallel flatbars with an end bar perpendicular to the flatbars, wherein an outboard end of the flatbars provide a niche for placement of the clamping means.
19 . The system of claim 18 , wherein a length of the elongated machineable soft jaw determines a distance of the outboard end from a face of the lathe chuck.
20 . A system comprising:
means for gripping an outer surface of a part having an outer diameter less than an outer diameter of a lathe chuck and adapted to be coupled from an inbound end to a face of a master chuck jaw coupled to the lathe chuck; and means for clamping around an outboard end of the gripping means.
21 . The system of claim 20 , wherein the outboard end includes a tab.
22 . The system of claim 21 , wherein the gripping means comprises a set of jaw extension members, each of the jaw extension members includes an extension arm having a base adapted to have coupled thereto an inboard machineable soft jaw and an outboard machineable soft jaw, and wherein the outboard machineable soft jaw includes the tab.
23 . The system of claim 21 , wherein the gripping means comprises a set of jaw extension members, each of the jaw extension members includes an elongated machineable soft jaw having the outboard end which includes the tab.
24 . The system of claim 23 , wherein a length of the elongated machineable soft jaw determines a distance of the outboard end from a face of the lathe chuck.
25 . A system for use with a lathe chuck comprising:
a set of jaw extension members, each said member having an inboard end and an outboard end, wherein each said inboard end is coupled to said lathe chuck, and wherein said set of jaw extension members is operable to grip an outer surface of a part; and a removable clamping assembly operable to clamp around said outboard end.
26 . The system of claim 25 , wherein the outboard end includes a tab.
27 . The system of claim 26 , wherein each of the jaw extension members includes an extension arm having a base adapted to have coupled thereto an inboard machineable soft jaw and an outboard machineable soft jaw, and wherein the outboard machineable soft jaw includes the tab.
28 . The system of claim 27 wherein each said outboard machineable soft jaw includes a bottom surface oriented toward an outer circumferential surface of said part, wherein said bottom surface is concaved to track a curvature of said outer circumferential surface of said part.
29 . The system of claim 26 , wherein each of the jaw extension members includes an elongated machineable soft jaw having the outboard end which includes the tab.
30 . The system of claim 29 , wherein a length of the elongated machineable soft jaw determines a distance of the outboard end from a face of the lathe chuck.
31 . A system comprising:
means for gripping an outer surface of a part where said gripping means is adapted to be coupled from an inboard end to a face of a master chuck jaw coupled to a lathe chuck; means for clamping around an outboard end of said gripping means, wherein said clamping means is removable.Join the waitlist — get patent alerts
