Abstract
An additive comprising a phosphazene compound that has at least two reactive functional groups and at least one capping functional group bonded to phosphorus atoms of the phosphazene compound. One of the at least two reactive functional groups is configured to react with cellulose and the other of the at least two reactive functional groups is configured to react with a resin, such as an amine resin or a polycarboxylic acid resin. The at least one capping functional group is selected from the group consisting of a short chain ether group, an alkoxy group, and an aryloxy group. Also disclosed are an additive-resin admixture, a method of treating a wood product, and a wood product.

exact text as granted — not AI-modified1 . An additive-resin admixture, comprising:
an additive admixed with a resin, the additive comprising a phosphazene compound comprising at least two reactive functional groups and at least one capping functional group bonded to phosphorus atoms of the phosphazene compound, one of the at least two reactive functional groups configured to react with cellulose, another of the at least two reactive functional groups configured to react with the resin, and one of the at least one capping functional group selected from the group consisting of a short chain ether group, an alkoxy group, an aryloxy group, an amine group, and a thioether group.
2 . The additive-resin admixture of claim 1 , wherein the resin comprises an amine resin or a polycarboxylic acid resin.
3 . The additive-resin admixture of claim 2 , wherein the amine resin comprises melamine, urea, guanidine, benzoguanidine, or combinations thereof.
4 . The additive-resin admixture of claim 2 , wherein the amine resin comprises a melamine-formaldehyde resin, a urea-formaldehyde resin, a melamine-urea resin, or a melamine-urea-formaldehyde resin.
5 . The additive-resin admixture of claim 2 , wherein the polycarboxylic acid resin comprises aldaric acid, oxalic acid, malonic acid, malic acid, fumaric acid, succinic acid, glutaric acid, adipic acid, citric acid, isocitric acid, aconitic acid, propane-1,2,3-tricarboxylic acid, 1,2,3,4-butanetetracarboxylic acid, or any combination of any of the foregoing acids.
6 . The additive-resin admixture of claim 1 , further comprising an aqueous-based solvent mixture in which the additive-resin admixture is dispersed.
7 . The additive-resin admixture of claim 1 , wherein the additive comprises from approximately 1% by weight to approximately 10% by weight of the additive-resin admixture.
8 . The additive-resin admixture of claim 1 , further comprising another phosphazene compound, the another phosphazene compound comprising one reactive functional group configured to react with at least one of the phosphazene compound and the resin.
9 . A method of treating a wood product, comprising:
mixing an additive with a resin to form an additive-resin admixture, the additive comprising at least two reactive functional groups and at least one capping functional group bonded to phosphorus atoms of a phosphazene compound, the at least two reactive functional groups configured to react with at least one of cellulose and the resin, and one of the at least one capping functional group selected from the group consisting of a short chain ether group, an alkoxy group, an aryloxy group, an amine group, and a thioether group; and impregnating the additive-resin admixture into a wood product.
10 . The method of claim 9 , wherein mixing an additive with a resin comprises mixing the phosphazene compound with an amine resin or a polycarboxylic acid resin.
11 . The method of claim 9 , wherein impregnating the additive-resin admixture into a wood product comprises reacting a first reactive functional group of the additive with a hydroxyl group in cellulose and a second reactive functional group of the additive with the resin.
12 . The method of claim 9 , further comprising applying a vacuum or pressure to the impregnated wood product.
13 . The method of claim 9 , further comprising heating the impregnated wood product.
14 . A wood product, comprising:
a phosphazene compound bonded to cellulose through a first phosphorus atom of the phosphazene compound and to a resin through a second phosphorus atom of the phosphazene compound, the phosphazene compound comprising at least one capping functional group bonded to at least one phosphorus atom of the phosphazene compound, one of the at least one capping functional group selected from the group consisting of a short chain ether group, an alkoxy group, an aryloxy group, an amine group, and a thioether group.
15 . The additive-resin admixture of claim 1 , wherein an additive-resin reaction product comprises the another of the at least two reactive functional groups reacted with the resin.
16 . The additive-resin admixture of claim 15 , wherein the another of the at least two reactive functional groups is reacted with an amine functional group or a polycarboxylic acid functional group of the resin.
17 . The additive-resin admixture of claim 1 , wherein each of the least two reactive functional groups comprises a halogen.
18 . The additive-resin admixture of claim 1 , wherein the at least one capping functional group comprises at least two capping functional groups, one of the at least two capping functional groups selected from the group consisting of a short chain ether group comprising a —OCH 2 CH 2 OR group where R is a methyl, ethyl, propyl, or butyl group, an alkoxy group comprising a —OR group where R is a methyl, ethyl, propyl, or butyl group, an amine group, and a thioether group, and another of the at least two capping functional groups comprising an aryloxy group.
19 . The wood product of claim 14 , wherein the at least one capping functional group comprises at least two capping functional groups, one of the at least two capping functional groups selected from the group consisting of a short chain ether group comprising a —OCH 2 CH 2 OR group where R is a methyl, ethyl, propyl, or butyl group, an alkoxy group comprising a —OR group where R is a methyl, ethyl, propyl, or butyl group, an amine group, and a thioether group, and another of the at least two capping functional groups comprising an aryloxy group.
20 . The wood product of claim 14 , wherein the wood product comprises from approximately 1% by weight to approximately 10% by weight of the additive.
21 . A reaction product of an additive and a wood product, comprising:
an additive reacted with a wood product, the additive comprising a phosphazene compound comprising at least two reactive functional groups and at least one capping functional group bonded to phosphorus atoms of the phosphazene compound, one of the at least two reactive functional groups reacted with cellulose of the wood product, another of the at least two reactive functional groups configured to react with a resin, and one of the at least one capping functional group selected from the group consisting of a short chain ether group, an alkoxy group, an aryloxy group, an amine group, and a thioether group.
22 . A method of treating a wood product, comprising:
incorporating an additive into a wood product, the additive comprising at least two reactive functional groups and at least one capping functional group bonded to phosphorus atoms of a phosphazene compound, one of the at least two reactive functional groups reacting with cellulose of the wood product, and one of the at least one capping functional group selected from the group consisting of a short chain ether group, an alkoxy group, an aryloxy group, an amine group, and a thioether group; and reacting the other of the at least two reactive functional groups with a resin to form an impregnated wood product.Join the waitlist — get patent alerts
