Abstract

Embodiments of the present invention include a enteral feeding apparatus and/or system in which an enteral feeding pump can be configured to deliver enteral formula to a patient in accordance with a delivery parameter determined using patient information associated with a patient to be treated and formula information associated with an enteral formula to be delivered to the patient. Exemplary embodiments can determine an estimated daily caloric intake for a patient and can configure the enteral feeding pump to satisfy the caloric requirements of the patient. Exemplary embodiments are also able to monitor the delivery of the enteral formula to ensure that the patient is being properly treated.

Claims

exact text as granted — not AI-modified
We claim:

         1 . An enteral feeding system comprising:
 a processing device; and a memory to store instructions that, when executed by the processing device, perform operations comprising:
 determining an estimated daily caloric intake requirement for a patient based on patient information;
 storing a caloric parameter included in the enteral formula information that indicates quantity of calories included per a specified volume of the enteral formula; and
 determining a delivery rate of the enteral feeding formula including:
 generating a quotient of the daily caloric intake requirement divided by the formula caloric parameter; and
 dividing the quotient by a time period over which the enteral formula is to be delivered.

         2 . The enteral feeding system according to claim 1 , wherein the operations further comprise specifying configuration parameters of an enteral feeding pump to configure the pump to deliver the formula using the determined delivery rate.

         3 . The enteral feeding system according to claim 1 , wherein the delivery rate includes a series of at least a first and a second different delivery rate for delivering the formula.

         4 . The enteral feeding system according to claim 1 , the operations further comprising:
 receiving delivery information related to formula delivered to the patient; and adjusting the delivery rate based on a relationship between the received delivery information and the determined delivery rate.

         5 . The enteral feeding system according to claim 4 , wherein at least one of the receiving and adjusting is performed in real-time.

         6 . The enteral feeding system according to claim 4 , wherein the adjusted delivery rate is determined for received delivery information associated with a second time period.

         7 . The enteral feeding system according to claim 4 , wherein the adjusted delivery parameter is determined for delivery of formula for a selectable time interval.

         8 . The enteral feeding system according to claim 4 , wherein the adjusted delivery parameter includes a series of at least a first and a second different delivery rate for delivering the formula.

         9 . The enteral feeding system according to claim 4 , wherein the operations further comprise specifying configuration parameters of an enteral feeding pump to configure the pump to deliver the formula using the adjusted delivery parameter.

         10 . The enteral feeding system according to claim 1 , wherein the enteral feeding formula is selectable from a plurality of formulas.

         11 . A method for administering enteral feeding formula to a patient comprising:
 receiving an estimated nutritional intake parameter that indicates an amount of a nutrient needed to meet a patient's nutritional requirements; receiving a formula parameter associated with an enteral feeding formula that indicates an amount of the nutrient included per a specified volume of the enteral formula; and determining a delivery rate of the enteral feeding formula including:
 generating a quotient of the nutritional intake parameter divided by the formula parameter; and
 dividing the quotient by a time period over which the enteral formula is to be delivered to the patient.

         12 . The method according to claim 11 , further comprising specifying configuration parameters of an enteral feeding pump to configure the pump to deliver the formula using the determined delivery rate.

         13 . The method according to claim 11 , wherein the delivery rate includes a series of at least a first and a second different delivery rate for delivering the formula.

         14 . The method according to claim 11 , further comprising:
 receiving delivery information related to formula delivered to the patient; and adjusting the delivery rate based on a relationship between the received delivery information and the determined delivery rate.

         15 . The method according to claim 14 , wherein at least one of the receiving and adjusting is performed in real-time.

         16 . The method according to claim 14 , wherein the adjusted delivery rate is determined for received delivery information associated with a second time period.

         17 . The method according to claim 14 , wherein the adjusted delivery parameter is determined for delivery of formula for a selectable time interval.

         18 . The method according to claim 14 , wherein the adjusted delivery parameter includes a series of at least a first and a second different delivery rate for delivering the formula.

         19 . The method according to claim 14 , further comprising specifying configuration parameters of an enteral feeding pump to configure the pump to deliver the formula using the adjusted delivery parameter.

         20 . An enteral feeding system comprising:
 a processing device; and a memory to store instructions that, when executed by the processing device, perform operations comprising:
 receiving an estimated nutritional intake parameter that indicates an amount of a nutrient needed to meet a patient's nutritional requirements;
 receiving a formula parameter associated with an enteral feeding formula that indicates an amount of the nutrient included per a specified volume of the enteral formula; and
 receiving delivery information related to formula delivered to the patient; and
 determining unmet nutritional requirements of the patient based on the estimated nutritional intake parameter, the delivery information, and the formula parameter;
 determining a compensation parameter for delivering formula to the patient to compensate for the unmet nutritional requirements; and
 specifying configuration parameters of an enteral feeding pump to configure the pump to deliver the formula using the determined compensation parameter.
