Use of nitrated lipids for treatment of side effects of toxic medical therapies

Abstract

Methods of treating the side effects of a toxic medical therapy using nitrated lipids are disclosed herein. In particular, the methods comprise the use of nitrated fatty acids or esters thereof to treat side effects, including organ system damage, caused by chemotherapy, radiotherapy, and the administration of other toxic agents.

What is claimed is: 
     
         1 . A method comprising administering an unsaturated nitrated oleic acid or ester thereof to a subject in need thereof in an amount effective to treat a side effect in the urinary system of the subject of a toxic medical therapy. 
     
     
         2 . The method of  claim 1 , wherein the side effect is reduced relative to the side effect prior to administration of the nitrated fatty acid or ester thereof. 
     
     
         3 . The method of  claim 1 , wherein the nitrated oleic acid is a monounsaturated fatty acid or a polyunsaturated fatty acid. 
     
     
         4 . The method of  claim 1 , wherein the oleic acid is selected from 9-nitrooleic acid, 10-nitrooleic acid, or combinations thereof. 
     
     
         5 . The method of  claim 1 , wherein the side effect in the urinary system comprises renal damage. 
     
     
         6 . The method of  claim 1 , wherein the toxic medical therapy is chemotherapy or radiotherapy. 
     
     
         7 . The method of  claim 6 , wherein the toxic medical therapy comprises administration of an agent selected from the group consisting of alkylating agents, anti-metabolites, alkaloids and terpenes, topoisomerase inhibitors, antibiotics, monoclonal antibodies, tyrosine kinase inhibitors, nanoparticles, and hormones. 
     
     
         8 . The method of  claim 6 , wherein the toxic medical therapy is chemotherapy comprising administration of adriamycin. 
     
     
         9 . A nitrated oleic acid or ester thereof for use in treating a side effect of toxic medical therapy, wherein the side effect is organ system damage and wherein the organ system damage is inflammation or oxidative stress to the organ, proteinurea, or necrosis or apoptosis of organ cells. 
     
     
         10 . The nitrated oleic acid or ester thereof of  claim 9 , wherein the oleic acid is selected from 9-nitrooleic acid, 10-nitrooleic acid, or combinations thereof. 
     
     
         11 . The nitrated oleic acid or ester thereof or  claim 9 , wherein the side effect is in the renal system. 
     
     
         12 . The nitrated oleic acid or ester thereof of  claim 9 , wherein the wherein the toxic medical therapy is chemotherapy or radiotherapy. 
     
     
         13 . The nitrated oleic acid or ester thereof of  claim 9 , wherein the toxic medical therapy is administration of adriamycin.
