Abstract

A program for running on a processor of a portable payment device is adapted for carrying out a payment interaction and permitting ticket storage in a memory of the portable payment device. The program is configured to interact with an access point and includes a set of instructions, a first code portion and a second code portion. The set of instructions, when executed by the processor, causes the portable payment device to perform the steps of: responsive to a first message from said access point, executing the first code portion; and responsive to a second message from the access point, executing the second code portion. The first code portion includes first instructions corresponding to the payment interaction. The second code portion includes instructions corresponding to the payment interaction and second instructions corresponding to the ticket interaction.

Claims

exact text as granted — not AI-modified
What is claimed is:

         1 . A payment device for communicating with a point of sales (POS) terminal to execute a payment transaction process, the payment device comprising:
 a communication module configured to communicate data between the payment device and the point of sales (POS) terminal; a memory; a processor; and a payment application for execution by the processor, wherein the memory is configured to store a plurality of sets of payment instructions including at least a first set of instructions and a second set of instructions, wherein the first set of instructions is for use by the payment application in a first type of payment transaction with the point of sales (POS) terminal, and wherein the second set of instructions is different from the first set of instructions and includes one or more data entries for use by the payment application in a second type of payment transaction, and wherein the processor is configured to:
 establish a communication interaction with the point of sales (POS) terminal via said communication module;
 send, during said communication interaction via the communication module, first information to the point of sales (POS) terminal, the first information indicative of payment instructions that the payment device is configured to execute;
 receive, via the communication module, a command from the point of sales (POS) terminal;
 select, on the basis of the content of the received command, a set of payment instructions of the plurality of sets of payment instructions; and
 execute, under the control of the payment application, a payment transaction process with the point of sales (POS) terminal using the selected set of instructions, and
   wherein the payment application causes the processor to execute the payment transaction process using the first set of instructions in response to selection of the first set of payment instructions, and wherein the payment application causes the processor to execute the payment transaction process using the second set of instructions in response to selection of the second set of payment instructions.

         2 . The payment device of claim 1 , wherein the first information is sent in response to a request received from the point of sales (POS) terminal.

         3 . The payment device of claim 1 , wherein the first information comprises a directory comprising data entries indicative of the type of payment instructions stored in the memory of the payment device.

         4 . The payment device of claim 1 , wherein at least one of the first set of instructions and the second set of instructions comprises a payment account number for use in a respective payment transaction.

         5 . The payment device of claim 1 , wherein the payment device comprises a mobile telephone.

         6 . The payment device of claim 1 , wherein the communications module is configured to perform contactless communication with the point of sales (POS) terminal using a short range communications method.

         7 . The payment device of claim 6 , wherein the short range communications comprises at least one of: infrared communications, Radio Frequency (RF) communications, and Bluetooth communications.

         8 . A non-transitory computer-readable storage medium having computer readable instructions stored thereon, which, when executed by processor, cause a payment device to perform a method of communicating with a point of sales (POS) terminal to execute a payment transaction process, the method comprising:
 establishing a communication interaction with the point of sales (POS) terminal via a communication module; during the communication interaction, sending, via said communication module, first information to the point of sales (POS) terminal, the first information indicative of payment instructions that the payment device is configured to execute; receiving, via the communication module, a command from the point of sales (POS) terminal; selecting, based on the content of the received command, a set of payment instructions from a plurality of sets of payment instructions, wherein the plurality of sets of payment instructions include at least a first set of instructions and a second set of instructions, the first set of instructions being for use by the payment application in a first type of payment transaction with the point of sales (POS) terminal, and the second set of instructions being different from the first set of instructions and including one or more data entries for use by the payment application in a second type of payment transaction; and executing, by a processor, a payment transaction process with the point of sales (POS) terminal using the selected set of instructions, wherein the payment application causes the processor to execute the payment transaction process using the first set of instructions in response to selection of the first set of payment instructions, and wherein the payment application causes the processor to execute the payment transaction process using the second set of instructions in response to selection of the second set of payment instructions.

         9 . A method of communicating with a point of sales (POS) terminal to execute a payment transaction between a payment device and the point of sales (POS) terminal, the method comprising:
 establishing a communication interaction with the point of sales (POS) terminal via a communication module; during the communication interaction, sending, via said communication module, first information to the point of sales (POS) terminal, the first information indicative of payment instructions that the payment device is configured to execute; receiving, via the communication module, a command from the point of sales (POS) terminal; selecting, based on the content of the received command, a set of payment instructions from a plurality of sets of payment instructions, wherein the plurality of sets of payment instructions include at least a first set of instructions and a second set of instructions, the first set of instructions being for use by the payment application in a first type of payment transaction with the point of sales (POS) terminal, and the second set of instructions being different from the first set of instructions and including one or more data entries for use by the payment application in a second type of payment transaction; and executing, by a processor, a payment transaction process with the point of sales (POS) terminal using the selected set of instructions, wherein the payment application causes the processor to execute the payment transaction process using the first set of instructions in response to selection of the first set of payment instructions, and wherein the payment application causes the processor to execute the payment transaction process using the second set of instructions in response to selection of the second set of payment instructions.
