Abstract
The present invention is directed to wheat plants having increased resistance to an imidazolinone herbicide. More particularly, the present invention includes wheat plants containing one or more IMI nucleic acids such as a Teal IMI cultivar. The nucleic acids are preferably located on or derived from different genomes. The present invention also includes seeds produced by these wheat plants and methods of controlling weeds in the vicinity of these wheat plants.

1 . A wheat plant:
a. of line Teal11A, a representative sample of seed of said line having been deposited with ATCC under Patent Deposit Designation Number PTA-3953, plants of said line comprising a wheat Imi2 nucleic acid encoding an IMI polypeptide comprising a serine to asparagine substitution in Domain E, the substitution having been induced by chemical mutagenesis, whereby said wheat plants have increased tolerance to an imidazolinone herbicide as compared to a wild type variety of said wheat, said Imi2 nucleic acid being the AHAS gene of the B-genome of the plant, or b. that is a hybrid, derivative, or progeny plant of said line, the hybrid, derivative, or progeny plant comprising said IMI polypeptide and thereby exhibiting said increased tolerance.
2 . The wheat plant of claim 1 , wherein the Imi2 nucleic acid is selected from:
a. nucleic acids comprising SEQ ID NO:3; or b. nucleic acids encoding polypeptides comprising SEQ ID NO:4.
3 . The wheat plant of claim 1 , wherein the wheat plant further comprises an Imi1 nucleic acid, said Imi1 nucleic acid encoding an IMI polypeptide comprising a serine to asparagine substitution in Domain E in the AHAS gene in the D-genome of the wheat plant.
4 . The wheat plant of claim 3 , wherein the Imi1 nucleic acid is the Imi1 nucleic acid of any one of FS-1, FS-2, FS-3, or FS-4 wheat plant lines.
5 . The wheat plant of claim 4 , wherein the Imi2 nucleic acid is selected from:
a. nucleic acids comprising SEQ ID NO:3; or b. nucleic acids encoding polypeptides comprising SEQ ID NO:4.

The wheat plant of claim 1 , wherein the imidazolinone herbicide is selected from: 2-(4-isopropyl-4-methyl-5-oxo-2-imidazolin-2-yl)-nicotinic acid, 2-(4-isopropyl-4-methyl-5-oxo-2-imidazolin-2-yl)-3-quinolinecarboxylic acid, 5-ethyl-2-(4-isopropyl-4-methyl-5-oxo-2-imidazolin-2-yl)-nicotinic acid, 2-(4-isopropyl-4-methyl-5-oxo-2-imidazolin-2-yl)-5-(methoxymethyl)-nicotinic acid, 2-(4-isopropyl-4-methyl-5-oxo-2-imidazolin-2-yl)-5-methylnicotinic acid, mixtures of methyl 6-(4-isopropyl-4-methyl-5-oxo-2-imidazolin-2-yl)-m-toluate and methyl 2-(4-isopropyl-4-methyl-5-oxo-2-imidazolin-2-yl)-p-toluate, or mixtures thereof.
7 . A wheat seed:
a. of line Teal11A, a representative sample of seed of said line having been deposited with ATCC under Patent Deposit Designation Number PTA-3953, plants of said line comprising a wheat Imi2 nucleic acid encoding an IMI polypeptide comprising a serine to asparagine substitution in Domain E, the substitution having been induced by chemical mutagenesis, whereby said wheat plants have increased tolerance to an imidazolinone herbicide as compared to a wild type variety of said wheat, said Imi2 nucleic acid being the AHAS gene of the B-genome of the plant, or b. that is a hybrid, derivative, or progeny plant of said line, the hybrid, derivative, or progeny plant comprising said IMI polypeptide and thereby exhibiting said increased tolerance.
8 . The wheat seed of claim 7 , wherein the Imi2 nucleic acid is selected from:
a. nucleic acids comprising SEQ ID NO:3; or b. nucleic acids encoding polypeptides comprising SEQ ID NO:4.
9 . The wheat seed of claim 7 , wherein the wheat plant further comprises an Imi1 nucleic acid.
10 . The wheat seed of claim 9 , wherein the Imi1 nucleic acid encodes an IMI polypeptide comprising a serine to asparagine substitution in Domain E of the AHAS gene in the D genome of the wheat plant.
11 . The wheat seed of claim 10 , wherein the Imi1 nucleic acid is the Imi1 nucleic acid from any one of FS-1, FS-2, FS-3, or FS-4 wheat plant lines.
12 . The wheat seed of claim 10 , wherein the Imi2 nucleic acid is selected from:
a. nucleic acids comprising SEQ ID NO:3; or b. nucleic acids encoding polypeptides comprising SEQ ID NO:4.

The wheat seed of claim 7 , wherein the imidazolinone herbicide is selected from 2-(4-isopropyl-4-methyl-5-oxo-2-imidazolin-2-yl)-nicotinic acid, 2-(4-isopropyl-4-methyl-5-oxo-2-imidazolin-2-yl)-3-quinolinecarboxylic acid, 5-ethyl-2-(4-isopropyl-4-methyl-5-oxo-2-imidazolin-2-yl)-nicotinic acid, 2-(4-isopropyl-4-methyl-5-oxo-2-imidazolin-2-yl)-5-(methoxymethyl)-nicotinic acid, 2-(4-isopropyl-4-methyl-5-oxo-2-imidazolin-2-yl)-5-methylnicotinic acid, mixtures of methyl 6-(4-isopropyl-4-methyl-5-oxo-2-imidazolin-2-yl)-m-toluate and methyl 2-(4-isopropyl-4-methyl-5-oxo-2-imidazolin-2-yl)-p-toluate, or mixtures thereof.
14 . The wheat seed of claim 7 , wherein said seed has been previously treated with an herbicidal composition.
15 . The wheat seed of claim 14 , wherein said herbicidal composition comprises an imidazolinone herbicide.
16 . The wheat seed of claim 15 , wherein said herbicidal composition comprises 2-(4-isopropyl-4-methyl-5-oxo-2-imidazolin-2-yl)-nicotinic acid, 2-(4-isopropyl-4-methyl-5-oxo-2-imidazolin-2-yl)-3-quinolinecarboxylic acid, 5-ethyl-2-(4-isopropyl-4-methyl-5-oxo-2-imidazolin-2-yl)-nicotinic acid, 2-(4-isopropyl-4-methyl-5-oxo-2-imidazolin-2-yl)-5-(methoxymethyl)-nicotinic acid, 2-(4-isopropyl-4-methyl-5-oxo-2-imidazolin-2-yl)-5-methylnicotinic acid, mixtures of methyl 6-(4-isopropyl-4-methyl-5-oxo-2-imidazolin-2-yl)-m-toluate and methyl 2-(4-isopropyl-4-methyl-5-oxo-2-imidazolin-2-yl)-p-toluate, or mixtures thereof.
17 . A method for controlling weeds within the vicinity of a wheat plant, comprising:
a. providing a wheat plant (A) of line Teal11A, a representative sample of seed of said line having been deposited with ATCC under Patent Deposit Designation Number PTA-3953, plants of said line comprising a wheat Imi2 nucleic acid encoding an IMI polypeptide comprising a serine to asparagine substitution in Domain E, the substitution having been induced by chemical mutagenesis, whereby said wheat plants have increased tolerance to an imidazolinone herbicide as compared to a wild type variety of said wheat, said Imi2 nucleic acid being the AHAS gene of the B-genome of the plant, or (B) that is a hybrid, derivative, or progeny plant of said line, the hybrid, derivative, or progeny plant comprising said IMI polypeptide and thereby exhibiting said increased tolerance; b. contacting the vicinity of the wheat plant with an effective amount of an herbicidal composition comprising an imidazolinone herbicide.
18 . The method of claim 17 , wherein the Imi2 nucleic acid is selected from:
a. nucleic acids comprising SEQ ID NO:3; or b. nucleic acids encoding polypeptides comprising SEQ ID NO:4.
19 . The method of claim 17 , wherein the wheat plant further comprises an Imi1 nucleic acid.
20 . The method of claim 19 , wherein the Imi1 nucleic acid encodes an IMI polypeptide comprising a serine to asparagine substitution in Domain E in AHAS gene in the D genome of the wheat plant.
21 . The method of claim 20 , wherein the Imi1 nucleic acid is the Imi1 nucleic acid from any one of FS-1, FS-2, FS-3, or FS-4 wheat plant lines.
22 . The method of claim 21 , wherein the Imi2 nucleic acid is selected from:
a. nucleic acids comprising SEQ ID NO:3; or b. nucleic acids encoding polypeptides comprising SEQ ID NO:4.

The method of claim 17 , wherein the imidazolinone herbicide is selected from: 2-(4-isopropyl-4-methyl-5-oxo-2-imidazolin-2-yl)-nicotinic acid, 2-(4-isopropyl-4-methyl-5-oxo-2-imidazolin-2-yl)-3-quinolinecarboxylic acid, 5-ethyl-2-(4-isopropyl-4-methyl-5-oxo-2-imidazolin-2-yl)-nicotinic acid, 2-(4-isopropyl-4-methyl-5-oxo-2-imidazolin-2-yl)-5-(methoxymethyl)-nicotinic acid, 2-(4-isopropyl-4-methyl-5-oxo-2-imidazolin-2-yl)-5-methylnicotinic acid, mixtures of methyl 6-(4-isopropyl-4-methyl-5-oxo-2-imidazolin-2-yl)-m-toluate and methyl 2-(4-isopropyl-4-methyl-5-oxo-2-imidazolin-2-yl)-p-toluate, or mixtures thereof.
24 . The method of claim 17 , wherein the imidazolinone herbicide is 5-ethyl-2-(4-isopropyl-4-methyl-5-oxo-2-imidazolin-2-yl)-nicotinic acid.
25 . The method of claim 17 , wherein the imidazolinone herbicide is 2-(4-isopropyl-4-methyl-5-oxo-2-imidazolin-2-yl)-5-(methoxymethyl)-nicotinic acid.
26 . A wheat plant comprising a wheat Imi2 nucleic acid and a wheat Imi1 nucleic acid wherein:
a. the wheat Imi2 nucleic acid is the AHAS gene of the B-genome of the wheat plant, and encodes an IMI polypeptide comprising a serine to asparagine substitution in Domain E, the substitution having been induced by chemical mutagenesis; b. the wheat Imi1 nucleic acid is the AHAS gene of the D-genome of the wheat plant, and encoding an IMI polypeptide comprising a serine to asparagine substitution in Domain E;
wherein the wheat plant has increased tolerance to an imidazolinone herbicide as compared to a wild type variety of said wheat plant.
27 . The wheat plant of claim 26 , wherein the Imi2 nucleic acid is identical to the Imi2 nucleic acid of wheat line Teal11A, a representative sample of seed of the line having been deposited with ATCC under Patent Deposit Designation Number PTA-3953.
28 . The wheat plant of claim 26 , wherein the Imi2 nucleic acid is selected from:
a. nucleic acids comprising SEQ ID NO:3; or b. nucleic acids encoding polypeptides comprising SEQ ID NO:4.
29 . The wheat plant of claim 26 wherein said plant is a progeny plant of wheat line Teal11A, a representative sample of seed of the line having been deposited with ATCC under Patent Deposit Designation Number PTA-3953.
