Abstract

An apparatus and method for measuring and marking level and plumb is providently disclosed herein. The multi-function level includes one or more adjustment devices which allow angular and/or translational adjustment of the level. One or multiple adjustment devices can be disposed on one or both ends of the level for the desired adjustability. The adjuster can be disposed against a work piece via a non-slip backing. The adjustable translational or angular movement is provided by a cam, wedge, dial, rack and pinion, or screw.

Claims

exact text as granted — not AI-modified
1 - 33 . (canceled)

         34 . A level apparatus comprising:
a body having a longitudinal axis and having two side faces, a top and a bottom surface, and two end faces with each end face located at the end of the longitudinal axis; an adjuster retained in the body, wherein the adjuster is selectively adjustable to provide movement of the level against a work piece; and at least one level indicator coupled to the body and visible on the two side faces of the body.

35 . The level apparatus of claim 34 further comprising:
a structure in the adjuster to receive a fastener for selectively coupling the adjuster to a work piece.

36 . The level apparatus of claim 35 wherein the adjuster is located on one side of a midpoint on the longitudinal axis.

37 . The level apparatus of claim 35 wherein the adjuster has a non-slip backing for selectively coupling the level to the work piece via the adjuster.

38 . The level apparatus of claim 36 wherein the adjuster is selectively coupled to the work piece, via a fastener, wherein the fastener is a screw, nail, suction cup, magnet, or clamp.

39 . The level apparatus of claim 35 wherein the adjuster is selectively adjustable to provide a translational or an angular movement of the level against the work piece.

40 . The level apparatus of claim 39 wherein the adjuster is a cam, wedge, dial, rack and pinion, or screw to provide the translational or angular movement.

41 . The level apparatus of claim 35 wherein the adjuster is a cylinder rotatably retained in the body and having a center, and wherein the fastener is disposed in the adjuster at a point offset from the center of the cylinder to provide a cam-type adjustment.

42 . The level apparatus of claim 36 wherein the body of the level includes a slot to accept and retain the adjuster while allowing translation of the adjuster within the body in order to provides angular or translational movement of the level apparatus.

43 . The level apparatus of claim 34 further comprising:
a plurality of adjusters retained in the body, wherein each of the adjusters is selectively attachable to the work piece, and wherein adjustment of the adjusters provide angular and translational movement of the level apparatus against the work piece in order to achieve a desired reading of the level.

44 . The level apparatus of claim 34 wherein the adjuster extends beyond the side face of the body in order to provide a gap between the level and the work piece in order to accept an installation piece to be leveled.

         45 - 83 . (canceled)

         84 . A level apparatus comprising:
a body having a longitudinal axis and a plurality of faces including two end faces, wherein each end face is located at an end of the longitudinal axis; a plurality of adjusters retained in the body, wherein each of the adjusters is selectively attachable to the work piece, and wherein adjustment of the plurality of adjusters provide an angular adjustment of the level apparatus against the work piece in order to achieve a desired reading of the level; and at least one level indicator coupled to the body.

85 . The level apparatus of claim 84 , wherein a first adjuster is disposed at a first end of the body, and a second adjuster is disposed at a second end of the body

86 . The level apparatus of claim 84 , wherein adjustment of the plurality of adjusters provide an translational adjustment of the level apparatus against the work piece in order to achieve a desired reading of the level.

87 . The level apparatus of claim 84 , further comprising:
a transverse wheel adjustment system that provides adjustable positioning of the level.

88 . The level apparatus of claim 87 , wherein the adjuster includes a slip-resistant material, that is compressible under a load to allow a side face of the level to rest flatly against a work or installation piece.

         89 . A level apparatus comprising:
a body having a longitudinal axis and having two side faces, a top and a bottom surface, and two end faces with each end face located at the end of the longitudinal axis; at least one level indicator coupled to the body and visible on the two side faces of the body; and means for selectively adjusting the body to provide movement of the level against a work piece.

90 . The level apparatus of claim 89 , further comprising:
means for retaining the adjuster against a work piece.

91 . The level apparatus of claim 89 , further comprising:
means for adjusting an angular position of the level against a work piece.

92 . The level apparatus of claim 89 , further comprising:
means for adjusting a translational position of the level against a work piece.
