Abstract

The invention relates to Factor H gene polymorphisms and haplotypes associated with an elevated or a reduced risk of AMD. The invention provides methods and reagents for diagnosis and treatment of AMD.

What is claimed is: 
     
         1 . A method of treating a patient diagnosed with or at risk for developing age-related macular degeneration (AMD) comprising administering an agent that inhibits activation of the alternative pathway (AP) of the complement cascade in the eye. 
     
     
         2 . The method of  claim 1  wherein the agent is a polypeptide that comprises a sequence encoded by one or more exons of the CFH gene sequence, and wherein said polypeptide binds to endothelial cell surfaces, has C3b co-factor activity, and inhibits activation of the alternative pathway (AP).
