Sharing files on a computer through use of uris

Abstract

A system described herein includes a receiver component that receives a computing event with respect to a file stored in a data repository of a personal computing device. An assignor component automatically assigns a uniform resource identifier to the file responsive to the receiver component receiving the computing event with respect to the file, wherein at least a portion of content of the file is reviewable by way of a web browser through utilization of the uniform resource identifier.

What is claimed is: 
     
         1 . A method executed by an operating system of a personal computing device, the method comprising:
 displaying an icon that represents a file;   detecting selection of the icon;   in response to detecting the selection of the icon, displaying a user-selectable option, the user-selectable option indicating that the file is shareable by way of a social networking application;   detecting selection of the user-selectable option; and   responsive to detecting the selection of the user-selectable option, uploading the file to the social networking application for sharing thereon.   
     
     
         2 . The method of  claim 1 , the personal computing device being a smart phone. 
     
     
         3 . The method of  claim 2 , the file being an image. 
     
     
         4 . The method of  claim 1 , further comprising:
 in response to detecting the selection of the icon, displaying a plurality of other user-selectable options that respectively correspond to a plurality of applications, each application in the plurality of applications configured to share the file with a contact of a user of the personal computing device.   
     
     
         5 . The method of  claim 4 , further comprising:
 receiving an indication of the file being accessed on the social networking application, the indication including at least one comment regarding the image.   
     
     
         6 . The method of  claim 1 , the file being a word processing document. 
     
     
         7 . The method of  claim 1 , further comprising:
 receiving an indication that the file is to be saved on the personal computing device; and   responsive to receiving the indication, assigning a uniform resource identifier to the file, the file being accessible by way of the uniform resource identifier.   
     
     
         8 . A computing device, comprising:
 a display screen;   a processor; and   a memory that comprises an operating system that is executed by the processor, the operating system of the computing device configured to perform acts comprising:
 displaying an icon representing a file on the display screen; 
 detecting that the icon has been selected; 
 responsive to detecting that the icon has been selected, displaying a selectable option on the display screen, the selectable option indicating that the file is shareable by way of a social networking application; 
 detecting that the selectable option has been selected; and 
 responsive to detecting that the selectable option has been selected, uploading the file to the social networking application for sharing thereon. 
   
     
     
         9 . The computing device of  claim 8  being a smart phone. 
     
     
         10 . The computing device of  claim 9 , the display screen being a touch-sensitive display screen, wherein detecting that the icon has been selected comprises detecting selection of the icon by way of the touch-sensitive display screen. 
     
     
         11 . The computing device of  claim 10 , the file being a word processing document stored on the computing device. 
     
     
         12 . The computing device of  claim 10 , the file being an image stored on the computing device. 
     
     
         13 . The system of  claim 12 , the acts performed by the operating system further comprising:
 responsive to detecting that the icon has been selected, displaying a plurality of other selectable options on the display screen, each option in the plurality of other selectable options corresponding to a respective application, each application configured to share the file with a contact of a user of the computing device.   
     
     
         14 . The system of  claim 12 , the acts performed by the operating system further comprising:
 receiving an indication that a contact of a user of the computing device has set forth a comment pertaining to the file; and   displaying a notification on the display screen indicating that the contact of the user of the computing device has set forth the comment pertaining to the file.   
     
     
         15 . The computing device of  claim 8  being a laptop computer. 
     
     
         16 . The computing device of  claim 8 , the file being a video file. 
     
     
         17 . The system of  claim 8 , wherein the icon indicates a version of the file. 
     
     
         18 . A smart phone having an operating system installed thereon, the operating system configured to perform acts comprising:
 causing a first icon to be displayed on a touch-sensitive display of the smart phone, the first icon being representative of an image stored on the smart phone;   detecting selection of the first icon by way of the touch-sensitive display;   responsive to detecting selection of the first icon, displaying a second graphical icon on the touch-sensitive display, the second graphical icon comprising a plurality of selectable options corresponding to respective applications usable to share the image;   detecting selection of a selectable option in the plurality of selectable options by way of the touch-sensitive display, the selectable option corresponding to a social networking application; and   responsive to detecting the selection of the selectable option, uploading the image to the social networking application for sharing thereon.   
     
     
         19 . The smart phone of  claim 18 , wherein the applications comprise an email application and an instant messaging application. 
     
     
         20 . The smart phone of  claim 18 , the acts further comprising:
 receiving an indication that a contact of a user of the smart phone has set forth a comment pertaining to the image; and   displaying a notification on the touch-sensitive display screen indicating that the contact of the user of the smart phone has set forth the comment pertaining to the image.
