Abstract

An apparatus and system for variable jewelry. A first magnetic element is secured to a backing A stabilizing layer is attached to the first magnetic element, the stabilizing layer defining a recess of a predetermined shape, and the recess exposes a portion of the first magnetic element.

what is claimed is: 
     
         1 . An apparatus comprising:
 a first magnetic element; and   a stabilizing layer formed on a first side of said first magnetic element, said stabilizing layer defining a recess of a predetermined shape, and wherein said recess exposes a portion of said first magnetic element.   
     
     
         2 . The apparatus of  claim 1  further comprising:
 a second magnetic element, magnetically attracted to said first magnetic element, having a perimeter conforming to said predetermined shape wherein rotational and lateral movement of said second magnetic element is restricted when a first side of said second magnetic element is engaged with said portion of said first magnetic element; and 
 a decorative element attached to a second side of said second magnetic element; 
 
     
     
         3 . The apparatus of  claim 1  wherein said first magnetic element is a magnetic backing 
     
     
         4 . The apparatus of  claim 2  further comprising a backing attached to a second side of said first magnetic element. 
     
     
         5 . The apparatus of  claim 4  wherein said backing has an attachment apparatus for attaching to a person or to clothing. 
     
     
         6 . The apparatus of  claim 5  wherein said stabilizing layer is formed from a non-magnetic material. 
     
     
         7 . The apparatus of  claim 6  wherein said first magnetic element is shaped and dimensioned the same as said backing 
     
     
         8 . A system comprising:
 a backing;   a first magnetic element having a first side secured to the backing;   a stabilizing layer formed on a second side of said first magnetic element, said stabilizing layer defining a recess of a predetermined shape, and wherein said recess exposes a portion of said first magnetic element;   a second magnetic element, magnetically attracted to said first magnetic element, having a perimeter conforming to said predetermined shape wherein rotational and lateral movement of said second magnetic element is restricted when a first side of said second magnetic element is engaged with said portion of said first magnetic element;   a first decorative element attached to a second side of said second magnetic element;   a third magnetic element, magnetically attracted to said first magnetic element, having a perimeter conforming to said predetermined shape wherein rotational and lateral movement of said third magnetic element is restricted when a first side of said third magnetic element is engaged with said portion of said first magnetic element; and   a second decorative element attached to a second side of said third magnetic element,   
     
     
         9 . The system of  claim 8  wherein said second magnetic element and said third magnetic element are optionally interchangeably engaged with said first magnetic element. 
     
     
         10 . The system of  claim 9  wherein said second magnetic element and said third magnetic element are neodymium magnets. 
     
     
         11 . The system of  claim 10  wherein said backing has an attachment apparatus for attaching to a person or to clothing. 
     
     
         12 . The system of  claim 11  wherein said stabilizing layer is formed from a non-magnetic material. 
     
     
         13 . The system of  claim 12  wherein said first magnetic element is shaped and dimensioned the same as said backing 
     
     
         14 . A system comprising:
 a plurality of backings, each backing of said plurality of backings connected to a first side of one of a plurality of first magnetic elements, each of said one of first magnetic elements further connected on a second side to one of a plurality of stabilizing layers, said stabilizing layer defining a recess of a predetermined shape, wherein said recess exposes a portion of said one of first magnetic elements;   a plurality of second magnetic elements, magnetically attracted to each one of said first magnetic elements, each one second magnetic element of said plurality of second magnetic elements having a perimeter conforming to said predetermined shape wherein rotational and lateral movement of said each second magnetic element is restricted when a first side of said each second magnetic element is engaged with said portion of said one of first magnetic elements; and   a plurality of decorative elements, each one of said plurality of decorative elements connected to one of said plurality of second magnetic elements.   
     
     
         15 . The system of  claim 14  wherein said each second magnetic element is interchangeable with all other second magnetic elements of said plurality of second magnetic elements. 
     
     
         16 . The system of  claim 15  wherein said each second magnetic element is a neodymium magnet. 
     
     
         17 . The system of  claim 16  wherein each backing of said plurality of backings has an attachment apparatus for attaching to a person or to clothing.
