System and Method for Pushing Content to a Terminal Utilizing a Network-Initiated Data Service Technique
Abstract
A system is provided for pushing content to a terminal located within a mobile network or a private network. The system includes a network node, such as a Session Initiation Protocol (SIP) proxy, located across a public network from the network including the terminal. The network node is capable of subscribing to a push service on behalf of the terminal such that the network node is also capable of receiving push content in accordance with the push service. Thereafter, the network node is capable of establishing a network-initiated data session with the terminal. In response to the network-initiated data session, the network node is further capable of registering the terminal such that the terminal is capable of receiving the push content based upon the registration.

24 . A method comprising:
sending, from a terminating node, a message to a network node via a first path to subscribe to a push service of an originating node to receive push content, the message comprising an identifier of the terminating node that is independent of a network address of the terminating node; receiving, at the terminating node, a trigger from the network node via a second path independent of the first path, the trigger indicating that the terminating node is no longer registered to the network node; and re-registering, by the terminating node, with the network node via the first path.
25 . The method of claim 24 , further comprising:
receiving, at the terminating node, push content via the first path.
26 . The method of claim 25 , further comprising:
sending, from the terminating node, a subscription request to the network node via the first path to subscribe to the push service of the originating node after re-registering with the network node, such that the network node forwards the subscription request to the originating node.
27 . The method of claim 24 , wherein the network node is a session initiated protocol (SIP) proxy.
28 . The method of claim 24 , wherein the trigger is received via one of a short message service message, an enhanced messaging service message, a multi-media message service, and a wireless application protocol push trigger.
29 . The method of claim 24 , wherein the identifier of the terminating node that is independent of a network address of the terminating node comprises one of a mobile station integrated services digital network (MSISDN) code and a global identifier of the terminating node.
30 . The method of claim 24 , wherein the trigger is non-internet protocol (IP)-based.
31 . An apparatus of a terminating node comprising:
a transmitter; a receiver; and a controller configured to:
send, using the transmitter, a message to a network node via a first path to subscribe to a push service of an originating node to receive push content, the message comprising an identifier of the terminating node that is independent of a network address of the terminating node,
receive, using the receiver, a trigger from the network node via a second path independent of the first path, the trigger indicating that the terminating node is no longer registered to the network node, and
re-register, using the transmitter, with the network node via the first path.
32 . The apparatus of claim 31 , wherein the controller is further configured to receive, using the receiver, push content via the first path.
33 . The apparatus of claim 32 , wherein the controller is further configured to:
send, using the transmitter, a subscription request to the network node via the first path to subscribe to the push service of the originating node after re-registering with the network node, such that the network node forwards the subscription request to the originating node.
34 . The apparatus of claim 31 , wherein the network node is a session initiated protocol (SIP) proxy.
35 . The apparatus of claim 31 , wherein the trigger is received via one of a short message service message, an enhanced messaging service message, a multi-media message service, and a wireless application protocol push trigger.
36 . The apparatus of claim 31 , wherein the identifier of the terminating node that is independent of a network address of the terminating node comprises one of a mobile station integrated services digital network (MSISDN) code and a global identifier of the terminating node.
37 . The apparatus of claim 31 , wherein the trigger is non-internet protocol (IP) based.
38 . A non-transitory computer-readable storage medium containing program instructions for subscribing to a push service, wherein execution of the program instructions by one or more processors of a terminating node causes the one or more processors to carry out the steps of:
sending, from the terminating node, a message to a network node via a first path to subscribe to the push service of an originating node to receive push content, the message comprising an identifier of the terminating node that is independent of a network address of the terminating node; receiving, at the terminating node, a trigger from the network node via a second path independent of the first path, the trigger indicating that the terminating node is no longer registered to the network node; and re-registering, by the terminating node, with the network node via the first path.
39 . The non-transitory computer-readable storage medium of claim 38 , wherein execution of the program instructions by the one or more processors of the terminating node further causes the one or more processors to carry out the step of:
receiving, at the terminating node, push content via the first path.
40 . The non-transitory computer-readable storage medium of claim 39 , wherein execution of the program instructions by the one or more processors of the terminating node further causes the one or more processors to carry out the step of:
sending, from the terminating node, a subscription request to the network node via the first path to subscribe to the push service of the originating node after re-registering with the network node, such that the network node forwards the subscription request to the originating node.
41 . The non-transitory computer-readable storage medium of claim 38 , wherein the network node is a session initiated protocol (SIP) proxy.
42 . The non-transitory computer-readable storage medium of claim 38 , wherein the trigger is received via one of a short message service message, an enhanced messaging service message, a multi-media message service, and a wireless application protocol push trigger.

The non-transitory computer-readable storage medium of claim 38 , wherein the identifier of the terminating node that is independent of the network address of the terminating node comprises one of a mobile station integrated services digital network (MSISDN) code and a global identifier of the terminating node.
