Claims
Abstract
TPO was used to promote the growth of bone in both rats and in mice. Gaps in both mouse and in rat bones were treated with a scaffold sized to fit the gap. Scaffolds that included TPO promoted better outcomes than scaffolds that included BMP-2 or scaffolds that did not include either TPO or BMP-2. These data indicate that compounds that exhibit thrombopoietic activity such a recombinant TPO can be used to promote bone growth and healing in mammals.

1 . A method for treating bone comprising the steps of:
treating at least one portion of a living bone with at least one exogenous compound that exhibits thrombopoietic activity.
2 . The method according to claim 1 , wherein the compound that exhibits thrombopoietic activity is TPO.
3 . The method according to claim 1 , wherein the compound that exhibits thrombopoietic activity is romiplostim or a romiplostim like compound.
4 . The method according to claim 1 , wherein the first compound that exhibits thrombopoietic activity is megakaryocyte growth and development factor.
5 . The method according to claim 1 , further including the step of:
providing at least one second compound that is useful for the treatment of living bone.
7 . The method according to claim 1 , wherein the contacting step occurs in vivo.
8 . The method according to claim 1 , wherein the contacting step occurs in vitro.
9 . The method according to claim 1 , wherein exhibits thrombopoietic activity is included in at least one formulation selected from the group consisting of; a paste, a glue, a coating, a gel, a powder and a liquid.
10 . A device for treating bone defects, comprising:
at least one physical support and at least one compound that exhibits thrombopoietic activity.
11 . The device according to claim 10 , wherein the device is biodegradable.
12 . The device according to claim 10 , wherein the device is a scaffold.
13 . The device according to claim 10 , wherein the first compound is TPO.
14 . The method according to claim 10 , wherein the first compound is romiplostim.
15 . The method according to claim 10 , wherein the first compound is megakaryocyte growth and development factor.
16 . The method according to claim 10 , wherein the compound exhibiting is included in at least one formulation selected from the group consisting of; a paste, a glue, a coating, a gel, a powder and a liquid.
17 . A method of treating a bone defect, comprising the steps of:
identifying a bone defect; providing a biodegradable device, wherein said device includes at least one compound that exhibits thrombopoietic activity; and contacting said biodegradable device with the bone defect.
18 . The method according to claim 17 , wherein said biodegradable device is a scaffold.
19 . The method according to claim 17 , wherein the bone defect is in an animal.
20 . The method according to claim 17 , wherein the bone defect is in human.
21 . The method according to claim 17 , wherein the device includes at least one additional compound that promotes bone growth.
22 . The method according to claim 17 , wherein the device includes at least one additional compound that inhibits infection.
