Abstract

This invention provides herbal compositions useful for increasing the therapeutic index of chemotherapeutic compounds. This invention also provides methods useful for improving the quality of life of an individual undergoing chemotherapy. Furthermore, this invention improves the treatment of disease by increasing the therapeutic index of chemotherapy drugs by administering the herbal composition PHY906 to a mammal undergoing such chemotherapy.

         18 . A method of treating cancer in a mammal comprising co-administering a therapeutically effective amount of
 i) an herbal preparation consisting essentially of  Scutellaria baicalensis, Glycyrrhiza uralensis, Ziziphus jujuba  and  Paeonia lactiflora ; and   ii) a chemotherapeutic formulation comprising a chemotherapeutic compound.   
     
     
         19 . The method of  claim 18 , wherein the herbal preparation is administered via oral route, and the chemotherapeutic formulation is administered via oral or parenteral route. 
     
     
         20 . The method of  claim 19 , wherein the herbal preparation is administered via oral route, and the chemotherapeutic formulation is administered via intravenous route. 
     
     
         21 . The method of  claim 18 , wherein the herbal preparation consists of  Scutellaria baicalensis, Glycyrrhiza uralensis, Ziziphus jujuba  and  Paeonia lactiflora , and one or more pharmaceutically acceptable carriers. 
     
     
         22 . The method of  claim 18 , wherein the herbal preparation is administered before the administration of the chemotherapeutic formulation. 
     
     
         23 . The method of  claim 18 , wherein the herbal preparation is administered after the administration of the chemotherapeutic formulation. 
     
     
         24 . The method of  claim 18 , wherein the herbal preparation is administered concurrently with the administration of the chemotherapeutic formulation. 
     
     
         25 . A method of relieving side effects of a chemotherapeutic compound in a mammal comprising co-administering a therapeutically effective amount of
 i) an herbal preparation consisting essentially of  Scutellaria baicalensis, Glycyrrhiza uralensis, Ziziphus jujuba  and  Paeonia lactiflora ; and   ii) a chemotherapeutic formulation comprising a chemotherapeutic compound.   
     
     
         26 . The method of  claim 25 , wherein the herbal preparation is administered via oral route, and the chemotherapeutic formulation is administered via oral or parenteral route. 
     
     
         27 . The method of  claim 26 , wherein the herbal preparation is administered via oral route, and the chemotherapeutic formulation is administered via intravenous route. 
     
     
         28 . The method of  claim 25 , wherein the herbal preparation consists of  Scutellaria baicalensis, Glycyrrhiza uralensis, Ziziphus jujuba  and  Paeonia lactiflora , and one or more pharmaceutically acceptable carriers. 
     
     
         29 . The method of  claim 25 , wherein the herbal preparation is administered before the administration of the chemotherapeutic formulation. 
     
     
         30 . The method of  claim 25 , wherein the herbal preparation is administered after the administration of the chemotherapeutic formulation. 
     
     
         31 . The method of  claim 25 , wherein the herbal preparation is administered concurrently with the administration of the chemotherapeutic formulation. 
     
     
         32 . A method of enhancing anticancer activity of a chemotherapeutic compound in a mammal comprising administering a therapeutically effective amount of
 i) an herbal preparation consisting essentially of  Scutellaria baicalensis, Glycyrrhiza uralensis, Ziziphus jujuba  and  Paeonia lactiflora ; and   ii) a chemotherapeutic formulation comprising a chemotherapeutic compound.   
     
     
         33 . The method of  claim 32 , wherein the herbal preparation is administered via oral route, and the chemotherapeutic formulation is administered via oral or parenteral route. 
     
     
         34 . The method of  claim 33 , wherein the herbal preparation is administered via oral route, and the chemotherapeutic formulation is administered via intravenous route. 
     
     
         35 . The method of  claim 32 , wherein the herbal preparation consists of  Scutellaria baicalensis, Glycyrrhiza uralensis, Ziziphus jujuba  and  Paeonia lactiflora , and one or more pharmaceutically acceptable carriers. 
     
     
         36 . The method of  claim 32 , wherein the herbal preparation is administered before the administration of the chemotherapeutic formulation. 
     
     
         37 . The method of  claim 32 , wherein the herbal preparation is administered after the administration of the chemotherapeutic formulation. 
     
     
         38 . The method of  claim 32 , wherein the herbal preparation is administered concurrently with the administration of the chemotherapeutic formulation. 
     
     
         39 . A method of treating cancer in a mammal comprising separately administering a therapeutically effective amount of
 i) an herbal preparation consisting essentially of  Scutellaria baicalensis, Glycyrrhiza uralensis, Ziziphus jujuba  and  Paeonia lactiflora ; and   ii) a chemotherapeutic formulation comprising a chemotherapeutic compound.   
     
     
         40 . A method of relieving side effects of a chemotherapeutic compound in a mammal comprising separately administering a therapeutically effective amount of
