Abstract
Integral, thermal storage and receiver system. The system includes a heat storage medium and a receiver for capturing incoming radiation, the receiver being in thermal contact with the heat storage medium and forming an integral part of it. In a preferred embodiment, the storage medium is a molten salt and the receiver is a black body cavity formed of polyhedral structures and immersed within the molten salt.

1 . An integral solar receiver-thermal storage system comprising:
a heat storage medium; and a receiver for capturing incoming radiation, the receiver being in thermal contact with the storage medium.
2 . The system of claim 1 wherein the storage medium is a molten salt.
3 . The system of claim 1 wherein the storage medium is selected from the group consisting of concrete blocks, metals, aggregates and graphite.
4 . The system of claim 2 wherein the receiver is immersed within the molten salt.
5 . The system of claim 1 wherein the receiver has a shape selected to maximize the capturing of incoming radiation.
6 . The system of claim 5 wherein the receiver includes three hexahedral chambers of increasing volume.
7 . The system of claim 1 wherein the receiver has a small opening to receive the incoming radiation.
8 . The system of claim 1 wherein the incoming radiation is light.
9 . The system of claim 7 further including a solar concentrator at the opening.
10 . The system of claim 1 wherein the receiver includes fins of high thermal conductivity material in thermal contact with the heat storage medium.
11 . The system of claim 10 wherein the high thermal conductivity material is copper or other medal or graphite.
