Abstract

Embodiments of methods and systems for controlling access to information stored on memory or data storage devices are disclosed. In various embodiments, methods of retrieving information from a data storage device previously deactivated by modification or degradation of at least a portion of the data storage device are disclosed.

         67 . A method comprising:
 storing machine readable data including multiple copies of data of interest or including redundancies within data of interest in a data storage device;   wherein at least a portion of the machine readable data is modifiable after a limited temporal duration by reduction of redundancy in the data of interest.   
     
     
         68 . The method of  claim 67 , wherein the at least a portion of the machine readable data is modifiable through erasure or writing over of the at least a portion of the machine readable data. 
     
     
         69 . The method of  claim 67 , further comprising:
 wherein the machine readable data is readable by a first type of data read system prior to the reduction of redundancy, and wherein following the reduction of redundancy in the data of interest the machine readable data is readable by a second type of data read system but not the first type of data read system.   
     
     
         70 . The method of  claim 69 , wherein the first type of data read system is an optical data read system. 
     
     
         71 . The method of  claim 69 , wherein the first type of data read system is a magnetic data read system. 
     
     
         72 . The method of  claim 69 , wherein the different read capability of the second type of data read system relative to the first data read system is conferred by special purpose software. 
     
     
         73 . The method of  claim 69 , wherein the different read capability of the second type of data read system relative to the first data read system is conferred by special purpose hardware. 
     
     
         74 . The method of  claim 69 , including storing read-support information on the data storage device, the read-support information readable with the second type of data read system but not the first type of data read system. 
     
     
         75 . The method of  claim 67 , further comprising:
 providing the data storage device.   
     
     
         76 . The method of  claim 75 , wherein the data storage device includes a substrate and a primary data storage medium on the substrate. 
     
     
         77 . The method of  claim 76 , wherein the primary data storage medium includes an electromagnetically-sensitive material. 
     
     
         78 . The method of  claim 67 , including storing at least one first portion of machine readable data in at least one first portion of the data storage device and storing at least one second portion of machine readable data in at least one second portion of the data storage device, the at least one first portion of machine readable data modifiable after the limited temporal duration. 
     
     
         79 . The method of  claim 78 , wherein the at least one second portion of machine readable data is substantially unmodifiable after the limited temporal duration. 
     
     
         80 . The method of  claim 67 , including storing the machine readable data in a binary code. 
     
     
         81 . The method of  claim 67 , wherein the data of interest includes at least one of audio data, video data, text data, graphical data, numerical data, or software code. 
     
     
         82 . A method of configuring a data storage device comprising:
 providing a data storage device;   storing machine readable data including multiple copies of data of interest or including redundancies within the data of interest in the data storage device, the machine readable data being readable by a first type of data read system;   wherein at least a portion of the machine readable data is modifiable after a limited temporal duration to render at least a portion of the machine readable data unreadable by a first type of data read system, wherein the machine readable data is modifiable after the limited temporal duration so that the redundancy in the data of interest is reduced.

The method of  claim 82 , wherein the at least a portion of the machine readable data is modifiable after the limited temporal duration to render the at least a portion of the machine readable data unreadable by the first type of data read system but readable by a second type of data read system. 
     
     
         84 . The method of  claim 82 , wherein the at least a portion of the machine readable data is modifiable through erasure or writing over of the at least a portion of the machine readable data. 
     
     
         85 . A method comprising:
 storing machine readable data including multiple copies of data of interest or including redundancies within the data of interest in a data storage device;   wherein at least a portion of the machine readable data is modifiable by a limited expected lifetime to render at least a portion of the machine readable data unreadable by a first type of data read system, wherein the machine readable data is modifiable by the limited expected lifetime so that the redundancy in the data of interest is reduced.   
     
     
         86 . The method of  claim 85 , wherein the at least a portion of the machine readable data is modifiable after the limited expected lifetime to render the at least a portion of the machine readable data unreadable by the first type of data read system but readable by a second type of data read system. 
     
     
         87 . The method of  claim 85 , wherein the at least a portion of the machine readable data is modifiable through erasure or writing over of the at least a portion of the machine readable data.
