Abstract

An extreme pressure additive for a lubricant may include one or more phosphorous containing compounds and one or more boron containing compounds. The ratio of weight of phosphorous to boron in the extreme pressure additive may vary between about 1 to about 30.

1 . An extreme pressure additive for a lubricant, comprising:
 one or more phosphorous containing compounds; and   one or more boron containing compounds such that a ratio of weight of phosphorous to boron varies between about 1 to about 30.   
     
     
         2 . The extreme pressure additive of  claim 1 , wherein the one or more phosphorous containing compounds include one or more of sodium tripolyphosphate, potassium tripolyphosphate, dicalcium phosphate, monocalcium phosphate, tricalcium phosphate, and trilithium orthophosphate. 
     
     
         3 . The extreme pressure additive of  claim 2 , wherein the one or more boron containing compounds include lithium tetraborate, lithium metaborate, borax, colemanite, potassium pentaborate, potassium tetraborate, and calcium borate. 
     
     
         4 . The extreme pressure additive of  claim 3 , wherein the boron containing compound includes calcium borate, and the ratio of weight of phosphorous to boron varies from about 1 to about 2.2. 
     
     
         5 . The extreme pressure additive of  claim 3 , wherein the boron containing compound does not include calcium borate, and the ratio of weight of phosphorous to boron varies from about 9 to about 30. 
     
     
         6 . The extreme pressure additive of  claim 1 , wherein the one or more phosphorous containing compounds includes tricalcium phosphate, and the one or more boron containing compounds include at least one of lithium tetraborate and calcium borate. 
     
     
         7 . The extreme pressure additive of  claim 1 , further including molybdenum disulfide. 
     
     
         8 . A lubricant, comprising:
 a base material;   one or more phosphorous containing compounds in a concentration of about 0% to about 15% in the base material; and   one or more boron containing compounds in a concentration of about 0.1% to about 10% in the base material.   
     
     
         9 . The lubricant of  claim 8 , wherein the concentration of the one or more phosphorous containing compounds is between about 0.25% and about 7%, and the concentration of the one or more boron containing compounds is between about 0.1% and about 7%. 
     
     
         10 . The lubricant of  claim 8 , wherein the concentration of the one or more phosphorous containing compounds is between about 0.25% and about 5%, and the concentration of one or more boron containing compounds is between about 0.1% and about 5%. 
     
     
         11 . The lubricant of  claim 8 , wherein the one or more phosphorous containing compounds include one or more of sodium tripolyphosphate, potassium tripolyphosphate, dicalcium phosphate, monocalcium phosphate, tricalcium phosphate, and trilithium orthophosphate. 
     
     
         12 . The lubricant of  claim 11 , wherein the one or more boron containing compounds include one or more of lithium tetraborate, lithium metaborate, borax, colemanite, potassium pentaborate, potassium tetraborate, and calcium borate. 
     
     
         13 . The lubricant of  claim 8 , wherein the one or more phosphorous containing compounds includes tricalcium phosphate, and the one or more boron containing compounds include at least one of lithium tetraborate and calcium borate. 
     
     
         14 . The lubricant of  claim 8 , wherein the base material is a base oil and the lubricant is a liquid lubricant. 
     
     
         15 . The lubricant of  claim 8 , wherein the base material is a thickener and the lubricant is a grease. 
     
     
         16 . The lubricant of  claim 8 , further including molybdenum disulfide. 
     
     
         17 . The lubricant of  claim 16 , wherein the concentration of molybdenum disulfide is between about 0.1% and 5% in the base material. 
     
     
         18 . A lubricant, comprising:
 a base material, the base material being at least one of a base oil and a thickener;   one or more phosphorous containing compounds in a concentration of about 0.25% to about 7% in the base material;   one or more boron containing compounds in a concentration of about 0.1% to about 7% in the base material; and   molybdenum disulfide.   
     
     
         19 . The lubricant of  claim 18 , wherein the concentration of the one or more phosphorous containing compounds is between about 0.25% and about 5%, and the concentration of the one or more boron containing compounds is between about 0.1% and about 5%. 
     
     
         20 . The lubricant of  claim 18 , wherein the one or more phosphorous containing compounds include one or more of sodium tripolyphosphate, potassium tripolyphosphate, dicalcium phosphate, monocalcium phosphate, tricalcium phosphate, and trilithium orthophosphate, and the one or more boron containing compounds include one or more of lithium tetraborate, lithium metaborate, borax, colemanite, potassium pentaborate, potassium tetraborate, and calcium borate.
