Abstract

This invention relates to cognitive radio based wireless communications of dynamic spectrum access networks, and in particular to a method of addressing zero-delay frequency switching for cognitive dynamic frequency hopping. The method combines regular (periodic) channel maintenance with dynamic frequency hopping over a cluster of vacated channels that are initially setup such that the switching delays for channel setup and channel availability check are eliminated.

1 . A method comprising:
 selecting and maintaining a first cluster of channels that have passed a channel availability check;   performing an initial channel setup for new channels in the first cluster of channels;   performing cognitive dynamic frequency hopping among channels in a second cluster of channels for which channel setup has been performed successfully; and   performing periodic channel maintenance for the operation channel on which a wireless system is performing data transmissions.   
     
     
         2 . The method of  claim 1  wherein channels in the first cluster for which channel setup has been performed successfully comprise channels in the second cluster. 
     
     
         3 . The method of  claim 1  wherein a channel that is not effectively maintained through regular channel maintenance comprises a new channel. 
     
     
         4 . The method of  claim 1  wherein the system schedules cognitive dynamic frequency hopping such that a maximum interval of periodic channel maintenance on every channel in the second cluster of channels is not exceeded. 
     
     
         5 . The method of  claim 4  wherein a channel comprises a well-maintained channel if the condition of having a maintenance interval less than the maximum allowed interval is satisfied. 
     
     
         6 . The method of  claim 4  wherein, if a channel is not well-maintained, the system eliminates that channel from the second cluster of channels. 
     
     
         7 . The method of  claim 1  further comprising channel move information embedded in management messages that are regularly transmitted from a base station to at least one customer device. 
     
     
         8 . The method of  claim 1  wherein the maximum maintenance interval is about 30 to 35 seconds. 
     
     
         9 . A method combining periodic channel maintenance with cognitive dynamic frequency hopping over a cluster of vacated channels that are initially setup so that the channel setup delay for channel switching is substantially reduced. 
     
     
         10 . The method of  claim 9  further comprising selecting and maintaining a first cluster of channels that have passed a channel availability check. 
     
     
         11 . The method of  claim 10  further comprising performing an initial channel setup for new channels in the first cluster of channels. 
     
     
         12 . The method of  claim 11  further comprising performing cognitive dynamic frequency hopping among channels in a second cluster of channels for which channel setup has been performed successfully. 
     
     
         13 . The method of  claim 12  further comprising performing periodic channel maintenance for the operation channel on which a wireless network is performing data transmissions. 
     
     
         14 . The method of  claim 9  wherein channels in the first cluster for which channel setup has been performed successfully comprise channels in the second cluster. 
     
     
         15 . The method of  claim 9  wherein a channel that is not effectively maintained through regular channel maintenance comprises a new channel. 
     
     
         16 . The method of  claim 12  wherein the network schedules cognitive dynamic frequency hopping such that a maximum interval of periodic channel maintenance on every channel in the second cluster of channels is not exceeded. 
     
     
         17 . The method of  claim 16  wherein a channel comprises a well-maintained channel if the condition of having a maintenance interval less than the maximum allowed interval is satisfied and, if a channel is not well-maintained, the network eliminates that channel from the second cluster of channels.
