Abstract

A vertical lift fan has a switchable transmission system. The fan includes a lift fan unit having one or more fan rotors. The fan further includes a differential gearbox having an input gear connectable to a transmission shaft for providing power to the fan, and first and second output gears. The first output gear drives the fan rotors. The fan further includes a first brake unit for braking the first output gear, and a second brake unit for braking the second output gear. When the second brake unit is activated and the first brake unit is deactivated, rotational action provided by the transmission shaft is diverted to the first output gear to turn the fan rotors, and when the first brake unit is activated and the second brake unit is deactivated, rotational action provided by the transmission shaft is diverted to the second output gear away from the fan rotors.

1 . A vertical lift fan having a switchable transmission system, the fan including:
 a lift fan unit having one or more fan rotors ( 13 ),   a differential gearbox ( 17 ) having an input gear ( 18 ) connectable to a transmission shaft ( 15 ) for providing power to the fan, and first ( 19 ) and second ( 21 ) output gears, the first output gear driving the fan rotors,   a first brake unit ( 21 ) for braking the first output gear, and   a second brake unit ( 22 ) for braking the second output gear;   wherein, when the second brake unit is activated and the first brake unit is deactivated, rotational action provided by the transmission shaft is diverted to the first output gear to turn the fan rotors, and when the first brake unit is activated and the second brake unit is deactivated, rotational action provided by the transmission shaft is diverted to the second output gear away from the fan rotors.   
     
     
         2 . A vertical lift fan according to  claim 1 , wherein the second output gear is an idler gear. 
     
     
         3 . A vertical lift fan according to  claim 1 , wherein the first output gear drives a drive shaft ( 20 ) which is coaxial with the fan rotors. 
     
     
         4 . A vertical lift fan according to  claim 1  further including a nose cone ( 23 ) which houses one of the first and second brake units. 
     
     
         5 . A vertical lift fan according to  claim 1  further including a sump fairing ( 26 ) which houses one of the first and second brake units. 
     
     
         6 . A vertical lift fan according to  claim 1 , wherein the differential gearbox is positioned below the lift fan unit.
