Abstract

A system for conveying printed information to a user, the system including a server receiving a data file representing an image, a software hosted on the server to generate an HyperText Markup Language environment including the image represented by the data file, wherein the HyperText Markup Language environment facilitates the manipulation of the image represented by the data file, and a user interface having a web browser to display the HyperText Markup Language environment to the user, wherein the image represented by the data file is viewable by the user.

1 . An electronic newspaper system for conveying information in the form of images to a user, the system comprising:
 a database storing newspaper information in a plurality of data files representing images of text and photos from a printed newspaper;   a server receiving the data files from the database;   a software hosted on the server to generate a HyperText Markup Language environment including the images obtained from the data files, wherein the HyperText Markup Language environment facilitates manipulation of the images; and   a user interface having a web browser to display the HyperText Markup Language environment to the user, wherein the images are viewable by the user.   
     
     
         2 . The electronic newspaper system according to  claim 1  wherein the stored data files are in Portable Document Format and the software converts the data files to a Portable Networks Graphics format for selective presentation of the images to the user through the user interface. 
     
     
         3 . The electronic newspaper system according to  claim 1  wherein the software converts the data files to a HyperText Markup Language standard with graphic and multimedia objects, XML, RSS or Portable Networks Graphics format for selective presentation of the images to the user through the user interface. 
     
     
         4 . The electronic newspaper system according to  claim 3  wherein the HyperText Markup Language environment tracks the data files presented to the user through the web browser and generates data tracking feedback to the server. 
     
     
         5 . The electronic newspaper system according to  claim 1  wherein the HyperText Markup Language environment presents the images in a user selectable viewing mode in at least one of a single page, a two-page reader spread with zoom, and a full two-page spread. 
     
     
         6 . The electronic newspaper system according to  claim 1  wherein the HyperText Markup Language environment enables the user to use mouse-following navigation through the images. 
     
     
         7 . The electronic newspaper system according to  claim 1  wherein at least one of the data files is an advertisement and the software causes the image of the advertisement to disappear after being presented through the user interface for a predetermined time. 
     
     
         8 . The electronic newspaper system according to  claim 1  wherein as the information in the data files is updated between publications of printed editions of the newspaper, images of the updated information are viewable by the user prior to printed publication of the updated information. 
     
     
         9 . A method of conveying information to a user, the method comprising the steps of:
 generating a database storing a plurality of data files representing images of text and photos from a printed newspaper;   operating a server to generate a HyperText Markup Language environment including the images;   embedding the images into the HyperText Markup Language environment, wherein the HyperText Markup Language environment facilitates manipulation of the images; and   displaying the HyperText Markup Language environment to the user using a web browser, wherein the images are viewable by the user.   
     
     
         10 . The method according to  claim 9  wherein the stored data files are in Portable Document Format and including a step of converting the data files to a Portable Networks Graphics format for selective presentation of the images to the user through a user interface. 
     
     
         11 . The method according to  claim 9  including a step of converting the data files to a HyperText Markup Language standard with graphic and multimedia objects, XML, RSS or Portable Networks Graphics format for selective presentation of the images to the user. 
     
     
         12 . The method according to  claim 11  wherein the HyperText Markup Language environment tracks the data files presented to the user through a web browser and generates data tracking feedback. 
     
     
         13 . The method according to  claim 9  wherein the HyperText Markup Language environment presents the images in a user selectable viewing mode in at least one of a single page, a two-page reader spread with zoom, and a full two-page spread. 
     
     
         14 . The method according to  claim 9  wherein the HyperText Markup Language environment enables the user to use mouse-following navigation through the images. 
     
     
         15 . The method according to  claim 9  wherein at least one of the data files is an advertisement and including a step of causing the image of the advertisement to disappear after being presented through to the user for a predetermined time. 
     
     
         16 . The method according to  claim 9  including updating the information in the data files between publications of printed editions of the newspaper wherein images of the updated information are viewable by the user prior to printed publication of the updated information. 
     
     
         17 . A method for conveying information electronically in the form of images to a user comprising the steps of:
 providing a content management and production system;   operating the content management and production system to create and store in a database a plurality of data files representing images of text and photos;   providing a content presentation system;   receiving the data files from the database with a server;   hosting software on the server to generate a HyperText Markup Language environment including the images obtained from the data files, wherein the HyperText Markup Language environment facilitates manipulation of the images; and   operating the content presentation system to deliver the images to a user interface having a web browser to display the HyperText Markup Language environment to the user, wherein the images are viewable by the user.   
     
     
         18 . The method according to  claim 17  wherein the stored data files are in Portable Document Format and the software converts the data files to a Portable Networks Graphics format for selective presentation of the images to the user through the user interface. 
     
     
         19 . The method according to  claim 17  wherein the HyperText Markup Language environment presents the images in a user selectable viewing mode in at least one of a single page, a two-page reader spread with zoom, and a full two-page spread and enables the user to use mouse-following navigation through the images. 
     
     
         20 . The method according to  claim 17  wherein at least one of the data files is an advertisement and the software causes the image of the advertisement to disappear after being presented through the user interface for a predetermined time.
