Abstract

An oral dosage form for administration to an animal comprising a biologically utilizable form of calcium and a extended release system that maintains the calcium level in the animal's bloodstream at a substantially beneficial level for a defined period of time.

An oral dosage form for administration to an animal comprising a biologically utilizable form of calcium and a extended release system for releasing said biologically utilizable form of calcium over an extended period of time after administration of said dosage form to said animal, whereby the calcium level in the bloodstream is maintained at a substantially beneficial level for a defined period of time. 
     
     
         2 . The oral dosage form of  claim 1 , wherein said animal is a human being. 
     
     
         3 . The oral dosage form of  claim 2 , wherein said biologically utilizable form of calcium comprises at least one calcium ion salt. 
     
     
         4 . The oral dosage form of  claim 3 , wherein said calcium ion form is selected from the group consisting of calcium carbonate, calcium citrate, calcium bicarbonate and mixtures thereof. 
     
     
         5 . The oral dosage form of  claim 4 , wherein, said calcium ion form comprises calcium citrate. 
     
     
         6 . The oral dosage form of  claim 1 , wherein said oral dosage form is a solid dosage form. 
     
     
         7 . The oral dosage form of  claim 6 , wherein said solid dosage form is selected from the group consisting of coated or uncoated forms of tablets, caplets or capsules. 
     
     
         8 . The oral dosage form of  claim 1 , wherein said extended release system comprises hydroxypropyl methylcellulose. 
     
     
         9 . The oral dosage form of  claim 1 , wherein said extended period of time is at least about six hours. 
     
     
         10 . The oral dosage form of  claim 9 , wherein said extended period of time is at least about eight hours. 
     
     
         11 . The oral dosage form of  claim 10 , wherein said extended period of time is at least about ten hours. 
     
     
         12 . The oral dosage form of  claim 11 , wherein said extended period of time is about twelve hours. 
     
     
         13 . The oral dosage form of  claim 1 , wherein said defined period of time is at least about six hours. 
     
     
         14 . The oral dosage form of  claim 13 , wherein said defined period of time is at least about eight hours. 
     
     
         15 . The oral dosage form of  claim 14 , wherein said defined period of time is at least about twelve hours. 
     
     
         16 . The oral dosage form of  claim 15 , wherein said defined period of time is about twenty-four hours. 
     
     
         17 . An oral dosage form for administration to a human being comprising a biologically utilizable form of calcium selected from the group consisting of calcium carbonate, calcium citrate and calcium bicarbonate and a extended release system comprising hydroxypropyl methylcellulose for releasing said biologically utilizable form of calcium over an extended period of time of at least about eight hours after administration of said dosage form to said animal, whereby the calcium level in the bloodstream is maintained at a substantially beneficial level for a defined period of time of at least about eight hours.
