Abstract

An optically imaging sensing device for imaging a substrate having a coded data pattern disposed on a surface thereof. The sensing device includes: an image sensor for imaging part of the coded data pattern; and a processor configured for: determining the orientation of the layout of the coding pattern; and decoding the data contained in the imaged part of the coded data pattern.

An optically imaging sensing device for imaging a substrate, said substrate having a coded data pattern disposed on a surface thereof, said coded data pattern comprising a plurality of discrete circular target features defining a grid, said grid comprising a plurality of tags with neighboring tags sharing target features, each tag comprising respective tag data encoded by a plurality of macrodot data elements contained in each tag, wherein said plurality of macrodot data elements encode:
 a plurality of Reed-Solomon symbols, wherein a set of said symbols define a Reed-Solomon codeword representing at least some of said tag data; and   an orientation of a layout of said tag data, said orientation being encoded a plurality of times in each tag,   said optically imaging sensing device comprising:
 an image sensor for imaging part of the coded data pattern; 
 a processor configured for: 
   determining the orientation of the layout of the tag data; and
 decoding the tag data contained in the imaged part of the coded data pattern. 
   
     
     
         2 . The optically imaging sensing device of  claim 1 , wherein a field of view of the image sensor is configured for imaging at least four target features during interaction with the substrate. 
     
     
         3 . The optically imaging sensing device of  claim 1 , wherein said processor is configured to identify a location using the decoded tag data. 
     
     
         4 . The optically imaging sensing device of  claim 3 , wherein said location data is represented by at least one Reed-Solomon codeword. 
     
     
         5 . The optically imaging sensing device of  claim 1 , wherein said processor is configured to identify a page identity using the decoded tag data. 
     
     
         6 . The optically imaging sensing device of  claim 1 , where said device comprises an electronic pen having a nib. 
     
     
         7 . The optically imaging sensing device of  claim 6 , wherein said processor is configured for determining a nib-to-tag distance using perspective-distorted imaged target features and the orientation, said target features being perspective distorted due to a tilt of the electronic pen relative to the surface.
