Systems and Methods for Processing Inoperative Document Links

Abstract

A client computer having one or more processors and memory, while displaying a browser application having a displayed address field, receives a user-identified document link. The client computer submits the user-identified document link to a server remotely located from the client computer. In response to a determination that the user-identified document link is inoperative, the client computer displays a plurality of distinct user-editable query terms in a search box distinct from the displayed address field of the browser application. At least one of the user-editable query terms is different from the user-identified document link, and is selected from a group including text extracted from the user-identified document link, and a term based on text extracted from the user-identified document link.

1 . A method, comprising:
 at a client computer having one or more processors and memory storing one or more programs that when executed by the one or more processors cause the client computer to perform the method, the method comprising:   while displaying a browser application having a displayed address field, receiving a user-identified document link;   submitting the user-identified document link to a server remotely located from the client computer;   in response to a determination that the user-identified document link is inoperative:
 displaying a plurality of distinct user-editable query terms in a search box distinct from the displayed address field of the browser application, wherein at least one of the query terms is different from the user-identified document link and is selected from a group comprising text extracted from the user-identified document link and a term based on text extracted from the user-identified document link. 
   
     
     
         2 . The method of  claim 1 , further comprising:
 in response to the determination that the user-identified document link is inoperative:
 displaying one or more search results, wherein the one or more search results are generated based at least in part on a respective user-editable query term of the plurality of distinct user-editable query terms. 
   
     
     
         3 . The method of  claim 1 , further comprising:
 in response to the determination that the user-identified document link is inoperative:
 displaying a link to a cached document, wherein the cached copy comprises a cached copy of a document corresponding to the user-identified document link, and wherein the link to the cached document includes a link to a location remote from the client computer. 
   
     
     
         4 . The method of  claim 1 , further comprising:
 in response to the determination that the user-identified document link is inoperative:
 displaying one or more candidate document links, wherein a respective candidate document link of the one or more candidate document links references a document that is available at a storage device remote from the client computer. 
   
     
     
         5 . The method of  claim 1 , wherein the document link is submitted to the server after the client computer determines that the user-identified document link is inoperative, the method further comprising receiving the plurality of distinct user-editable query terms from the server. 
     
     
         6 . The method of  claim 5 , wherein the user-identified document link is inoperative if the client computer is unable to retrieve a document from a location corresponding to the user-identified document link. 
     
     
         7 . The method of  claim 5 , wherein the user-identified document link is inoperative if it includes a misspelled term. 
     
     
         8 . The method of  claim 5 , wherein the user-identified document link is inoperative if it is incomplete. 
     
     
         9 . A client computer, comprising:
 memory;   one or more processors;   a display device;   one or more programs stored in the memory and configured for execution by the one or more processors, the one or more programs including instructions for:
 while displaying a browser application having a displayed address field, receiving a user-identified document link; 
 submitting the user-identified document link to a server remotely located from the client computer; and 
 displaying, in response to a determination that the user-identified document link is inoperative, a plurality of distinct user-editable query terms in a search box distinct from the displayed address field of the browser application, wherein at least one of the query terms is different from the user-identified document link and is selected from a group comprising text extracted from the user-identified document link and a term based on text extracted from the user-identified document link. 
   
     
     
         10 . The client computer of  claim 9 , wherein the one or more programs further comprise instructions for displaying, in response to the determination that the user-identified document link is inoperative, one or more search results, wherein the one or more search results are generated based at least in part on a respective user-editable query term of the plurality of distinct user-editable query terms. 
     
     
         11 . The client computer of  claim 9 , wherein the one or more programs further comprise instructions for displaying, in response to the determination that the user-identified document link is inoperative, a link to a cached document, wherein the cached copy comprises a cached copy of a document corresponding to the user-identified document link, and wherein the link to the cached document includes a link to a location remote from the client computer. 
     
     
         12 . The client computer of  claim 9 , wherein the one or more programs further comprise instructions for displaying, in response to the determination that the user-identified document link is inoperative, one or more candidate document links, wherein a respective candidate document link of the one or more candidate document links references a document that is available at a storage device remote from the client computer. 
     
     
         13 . The client computer of  claim 9 , wherein the one or more programs further comprise instructions for submitting the document link to the server after the client computer determines that the user-identified document link is inoperative, and instructions for receiving the plurality of distinct user-editable query terms from the server. 
     
     
         14 . The client computer of  claim 13 , wherein the user-identified document link is inoperative if the client computer is unable to retrieve a document from a location corresponding to the user-identified document link. 
     
     
         15 . The client computer of  claim 13 , wherein the user-identified document link is inoperative if it includes a misspelled term. 
     
     
         16 . The client computer of  claim 13 , wherein the user-identified document link is inoperative if it is incomplete. 
     
     
         17 . A non-transitory computer readable storage medium storing one or more programs for execution by one or more processors of a client computer, the one or more programs including instructions for:
 while displaying a browser application having a displayed address field, receiving a user-identified document link;   submitting the user-identified document link to a server remotely located from the client computer; and   displaying, in response to a determination that the user-identified document link is inoperative, a plurality of distinct user-editable query terms in a search box distinct from the displayed address field of the browser application, wherein at least one of the query terms is different from the user-identified document link and is selected from a group comprising text extracted from the user-identified document link and a term based on text extracted from the user-identified document link.   
     
     
         18 . The non-transitory computer readable storage medium of  claim 17 , wherein the one or more programs further comprise instructions for displaying, in response to the determination that the user-identified document link is inoperative, one or more search results, wherein the one or more search results are generated based at least in part on a respective user-editable query term of the plurality of distinct user-editable query terms.

The non-transitory computer readable storage medium of  claim 17 , wherein the one or more programs further comprise instructions for displaying, in response to the determination that the user-identified document link is inoperative, a link to a cached document, wherein the cached copy comprises a cached copy of a document corresponding to the user-identified document link, and wherein the link to the cached document includes a link to a location remote from the client computer. 
     
     
         20 . The non-transitory computer readable storage medium of  claim 17 , wherein the one or more programs further comprise instructions for displaying, in response to the determination that the user-identified document link is inoperative, one or more candidate document links, wherein a respective candidate document link of the one or more candidate document links references a document that is available at a storage device remote from the client computer. 
     
     
         21 . The non-transitory computer readable storage medium of  claim 17 , wherein the one or more programs further comprise instructions for submitting the document link to the server after the client computer determines that the user-identified document link is inoperative, and instructions for receiving the plurality of distinct user-editable query terms from the server. 
     
     
         22 . The non-transitory computer readable storage medium of  claim 21 , wherein the user-identified document link is inoperative if the client computer is unable to retrieve a document from a location corresponding to the user-identified document link. 
     
     
         23 . The non-transitory computer readable storage medium of  claim 21 , wherein the user-identified document link is inoperative if it includes a misspelled term. 
     
     
         24 . The non-transitory computer readable storage medium of  claim 21 , wherein the user-identified document link is inoperative if it is incomplete.
