Claims

Abstract

Embodiments herein provide hemostatic compositions comprising a plurality of liquid-expandable articles arranged on a backing material. In general, embodiments include methods for treating hemorrhagic injuries. More specifically, there is provided a method to effect rapid hemostatic response and control hemorrhage by introducing a hemostatic composition into a bleeding wound cavity. An embodiment also provides a method of preparing or manufacturing such a hemostatic composition.

1 . A hemostatic composition, comprising:
 a backing material having a surface; and   a plurality of liquid-expandable articles disposed on the surface of the backing material, wherein the plurality of liquid-expandable articles are adapted to expand into expanded articles upon contact with a liquid and extend away from the surface of the backing material.   
     
     
         2 . The hemostatic composition of  claim 1 , further comprising one or more therapeutic agents coupled to at least one of the backing material and the plurality of liquid-expandable articles. 
     
     
         3 . The hemostatic composition of  claim 1 , wherein the liquid-expandable articles comprise compressed sponges. 
     
     
         4 . The hemostatic composition of  claim 1 , wherein the liquid-expandable articles comprise cellulose. 
     
     
         5 . The hemostatic composition of  claim 1 , further comprising one or more hemostatic agents coupled to at least one of the backing material and the plurality of liquid-expandable articles. 
     
     
         6 . The hemostatic composition of  claim 1 , further comprising one or more chitosans coupled to at least one of the backing material and the plurality of liquid-expandable articles. 
     
     
         7 . The hemostatic composition of  claim 1 , wherein each liquid-expandable article within the plurality of liquid-expandable articles comprises a marker. 
     
     
         8 . The hemostatic composition of  claim 1 , wherein the backing material comprises a marker. 
     
     
         9 . The hemostatic composition of  claim 1 , wherein the liquid-expandable articles expand to 80% or greater of their maximum expansion capacity in 30 seconds or less following immersion in liquid. 
     
     
         10 . The hemostatic composition of  claim 1 , wherein the volume ratio of liquid-expandable articles to expanded articles is at least 4×. 
     
     
         11 . The hemostatic composition of  claim 1 , wherein the surface of the backing material is a first surface, the backing material further comprising a second surface, and wherein the plurality of liquid-expandable articles are disposed on both the first and second surfaces of the backing material. 
     
     
         12 . The hemostatic composition of  claim 1 , wherein the volume of each liquid-expandable article is from 0.7 mm 3  to 7000 mm 3 . 
     
     
         13 . A method of treating an individual having a bleeding wound, comprising
 applying to the wound a hemostatic composition comprising a plurality of liquid-expandable articles, wherein
 the plurality of liquid expandable articles are coupled to a backing material, and 
 the plurality of liquid expandable articles are configured to expand into expanded articles upon contact with a liquid. 
   
     
     
         14 . The method of  claim 13 , wherein the plurality of liquid-expandable articles expand and conform to a shape defined by at least a portion of the cavity. 
     
     
         15 . The method of  claim 13 , wherein the plurality of liquid-expandable articles each have a starting volume and a second volume defined by the expanded articles that is greater than the starting volume. 
     
     
         16 . The method of  claim 13 , wherein the volume of each liquid-expandable article is from 0.7 mm 3  to 7000 mm 3 . 
     
     
         17 . A method of manufacturing a medical device, comprising:
 forming an absorbent material into a plurality of liquid-expandable articles; and   coupling the plurality of liquid-expandable articles to a surface of a backing material.   
     
     
         18 . The method of  claim 17 , wherein said forming an absorbent material into liquid-expandable articles comprises compressing the absorbent material. 
     
     
         19 . The method of  claim 17 , further comprising applying a therapeutic agent to the absorbent material prior to, during or subsequent to forming the liquid-expandable articles. 
     
     
         20 . The method of  claim 17 , further comprising coupling the liquid-expandable articles on the surface of the backing material in a predetermined pattern.
