Identification labels and methods of using the same

Abstract

Labels and methods for removing a portion of a release liner from a label are disclosed. An example baggage label includes a release liner includes a first line of weakness including a first tapered or curved portion. The first line of weakness includes a first end that intersects the first edge and a second end between the first edge and the second edge and substantially orthogonally coupled to a score. A tab is formed in the release liner and defined by at least the first edge, the second edge and the first line of weakness. The tab is structured so that removal of the tab from the substrate forms a first tear in the release liner that diagonally extends from the second end of the first line of weakness and forms a tail between the first tear and the score to enable removal of the tab.

1 . A baggage label comprising:
 a substrate;   a layer of adhesive on the substrate;   a layer of release coating in contact with the layer of adhesive; and   a release liner comprising a first surface in contact with the release coating, the release liner comprising:
 a first tapered or curved line of weakness having a first end and a second end, the first end intersecting with a first edge of the release liner and the second end substantially orthogonally coupled to a score; 
 a second tapered or curved line of weakness having a third end and a fourth end, the third end intersecting with a second edge of the release liner and the fourth end substantially orthogonally coupled to the score, wherein a portion of the release liner is removable by separating the portion from the substrate along the first and second tapered or curved lines of weakness and tearing a first tear line from the second end of the first line of weakness and a second tear line from the fourth end of the second line of weakness to converge the first and second tear lines and enable removal of the portion. 
   
     
     
         2 . The baggage label of  claim 1 , wherein the first line of weakness is at least one of a perforation, a score, a fold, or a cut. 
     
     
         3 . The baggage label of  claim 1 , wherein the portion is adjacent a first end of the release liner, the score is separated from the first end by a first distance and the score is separated from a second end of the release liner by a second distance, wherein the first distance is less than the second distance. 
     
     
         4 . The baggage label of  claim 1 , wherein the substrate comprises a line of weakness to divide the substrate into a first substrate portion and a second substrate portion, the first substrate portion forms a baggage claim check and the second substrate portion forms a baggage identification tag. 
     
     
         5 . The baggage label of  claim 1 , wherein, after the removal of the portion, a first end of the substrate is to be coupled, via the adhesive, to a second surface of the release liner. 
     
     
         6 . The baggage label of  claim 1 , wherein the label includes travel information. 
     
     
         7 . The baggage label of  claim 6 , wherein the travel information is one or more of flight information, passenger information, baggage information, a machine readable code, human readable indicia, an origin, or a destination, information in a first language, information in a second language, or information regarding a security status. 
     
     
         8 . The baggage label of  claim 1 , wherein the portion is a baggage claim ticket. 
     
     
         9 . The baggage label of  claim 1 , further comprising a radio frequency identification tag. 
     
     
         10 . The baggage label of  claim 1 , wherein the first taper meets the first edge of the release liner at a first distance from the first end and the score is positioned along the label at a second distance from where the taper meets the first edge, the second distance greater than the first distance. 
     
     
         11 . A baggage label, comprising:
 a substrate;   a layer of adhesive on the substrate;   a layer of release coating in contact with the layer of adhesive; and   a release liner comprising a first surface in contact with the release coating, the release liner comprising:   a first edge;   a second edge opposite the first edge;   a first line of weakness including a first tapered or curved portion, the first line of weakness comprising a first end that intersects the first edge and a second end between the first edge and the second edge and substantially orthogonally coupled to a score;   a tab formed in the release liner and defined by at least the first edge, the second edge and the first line of weakness, wherein the tab is structured so that removal of the tab from the substrate forms a first tear in the release liner that diagonally extends from the second end of the first line of weakness and forms a tail between the first tear and the score to enable removal of the tab.   
     
     
         12 . The baggage label of  claim 11 , wherein the release liner further includes a second line of weakness including a second tapered or curved portion and having a first end that intersects the second edge of the release liner and a second end disposed between the first edge and the second edge of the release liner and substantially orthogonal to the score, wherein removal of the tab forms a second tear in the release liner that diagonally extends from the second end of the second line of weakness and the tail is formed between the first tear, the second tear and the score. 
     
     
         13 . The baggage label of  claim 12 , wherein the first tear and the second tear are converging tear lines. 
     
     
         14 . The baggage label of  claim 11 , wherein the first line of weakness is at least one of a perforation, a score, a fold, or a cut. 
     
     
         15 . The baggage label of  claim 11 , wherein the label includes travel information. 
     
     
         16 . The baggage label of  claim 15 , wherein the travel information is one or more of flight information, passenger information, baggage information, a machine readable code, human readable indicia, an origin, or a destination, information in a first language, information in a second language, or information regarding a security status. 
     
     
         17 . The baggage label of  claim 11 , wherein the first line of weakness is tapered along a diagonal line. 
     
     
         18 . The baggage label of  claim 11 , further comprising a radio frequency identification tag. 
     
     
         19 . The baggage label of  claim 11 , wherein the tab is adjacent a first end of the release liner, the score is separated from the first end by a first distance and the score is separated from a second end of the release liner by a second distance, wherein the first distance is less than the second distance. 
     
     
         20 . The baggage label of  claim 11 , wherein the substrate comprises a line of weakness to divide the substrate into a first substrate portion and a second substrate portion, the first substrate portion forms a baggage claim check and the second substrate portion forms a baggage identification tag. 
     
     
         21 . The baggage label of  claim 11 , wherein, after the removal of the tab, a first end of the substrate is to be coupled, via the adhesive, to a second surface of the release liner.
