Systems and Methods for Creating and Using Keyword Navigation on the Internet

Abstract

Systems and methods are disclosed for using keywords to navigate to web pages on the Internet. In one implementation, a system includes a processor and a memory. The memory stores instructions that cause the processor to receive a search string from a website, the search string being entered by a website visitor using a browser. The processor uses a database to locate a keyword associated with the website that matches the search string. The processor determines a web page address associated with the keyword and causes the browser to be directed to the web page address. In another aspect, a method for managing keywords used for directing a browser to a web page hosted at a website, is disclosed. The method includes receiving a domain name for the website from a user and verifying that the user is authorized to provide keywords for the domain name. The method further includes receiving a keyword for the domain name from the user, receiving a web page address corresponding to the keyword from the user and storing the web page address, the keyword, and the domain name in a database to associate the web page address, the keyword, and the domain name.

1 . A computer-implemented method for directing a browser to a web page hosted at a website, comprising:
 receiving a search string from the website, the search string entered by a website visitor using the browser;   locating in a database a keyword associated with the website that matches the search string;   determining a web page address associated with the keyword; and   causing the browser to be directed to the web page address.   
     
     
         2 . The method of  claim 1 , further comprising causing the search string to be passed to a search function when a keyword matching the search string cannot be located in the database. 
     
     
         3 . The method of  claim 1 , further comprising storing statistics about the search string. 
     
     
         4 . The method of  claim 3 , wherein the statistics include at least one of: a number of times the search string has been received from the website, a location of the website visitor, and a date. 
     
     
         5 . The method of  claim 1 , further comprising:
 identifying a location of the website visitor,   wherein determining the web page address associated with the keyword is dependent upon the location.   
     
     
         6 . The method of  claim 1 , further comprising:
 identifying a device type of the website visitor,   wherein determining the web page address associated with the keyword is dependent upon the device type.   
     
     
         7 . The method of  claim 1 , further comprising:
 verifying that the web page address is still valid; and   when the web page address is not valid, causing the search string to be passed to a search function.   
     
     
         8 . A system for directing a browser to a web page hosted at a website, comprising:
 a processor; and   a memory coupled to the processor, the memory storing instructions to direct the processor to perform operations comprising:
 receiving a search string from the website, the search string entered by a website visitor using the browser, 
 locating in a database, by the processor, a keyword associated with the website that matches the search string, 
 determining a web page address associated with the keyword, and 
 causing the browser to be directed to the web page address. 
   
     
     
         9 . The system of  claim 8 , the operations further comprising causing the search string to be passed to a search function when a keyword matching the search string cannot be located in the database. 
     
     
         10 . The system of  claim 8 , the operations further comprising storing statistics about the search string. 
     
     
         11 . The system of  claim 8 , the operations further comprising:
 identifying a location of the website visitor,   wherein determining the web page address associated with the keyword is dependent upon the location.   
     
     
         12 . The system of  claim 8 , the operations further comprising:
 identifying a device type of the website visitor,   wherein determining the web page address associated with the keyword is dependent upon the device type.   
     
     
         13 . The system of  claim 8 , the operations further comprising:
 verifying that the web page address is still valid; and   when the web page address is not valid, causing the search string to be passed to a search function.   
     
     
         14 . A computer-readable storage device storing instructions for directing a browser to a web page hosted at a website, the instructions causing one or more computer processors to perform operations, comprising:
 receiving a search string from the website, the search string entered by a website visitor using the browser,   locating in a database, by the processor, a keyword associated with the website that matches the search string,   determining a web page address associated with the keyword, and causing the browser to be directed to the web page address.   
     
     
         15 . A computer-implemented method for managing keywords for a web page hosted at a website, comprising:
 receiving a domain name for the website from a user;   verifying that the user is authorized to provide keywords for the domain name;   receiving a keyword for the domain name from the user;   receiving a web page address corresponding to the keyword from the user; and   storing the keyword, the web page address, and the domain name in a database to associate the web page address, the keyword, and the domain name.   
     
     
         16 . The method of  claim 15 , further comprising providing the user with computer-readable instructions that enable a search function of the website to communicate with the processor. 
     
     
         17 . The method of  claim 15 , further comprising:
 receiving a keyword type for the keyword from the user; and   storing the keyword type in the database to associate the keyword type with the keyword.   
     
     
         18 . The method of  claim 15 , further comprising:
 receiving a location from the user; and   storing the location in the database, such that the location is associated with the keyword and the URL.   
     
     
         19 . The method of  claim 15 , further comprising:
 receiving a device type from the user; and   storing the device type in the database, such that the device type is associated with the keyword and the URL.   
     
     
         20 . The method of  claim 15 , further comprising:
 receiving a description of the keyword from the user;   storing the description of the keyword in the database, the description being associated with the keyword;   receiving information identifying a social media account; and   sending a communication to the social media account, the communication including the description.   
     
     
         21 . The method of  claim 15 , further comprising:
 receiving a description of the web page address;   storing the description of the web page address in the database, the description being associated with the web page address;   creating a data file from the data in the database, the data file including the domain name, the web page address, the description of the web page address, and keywords associated with the web page address and the domain name; and   making the data file available to a search function.   
     
     
         22 . The method of  claim 15 , further comprising:
 searching web pages hosted at the domain name;   determining a frequently occurring word or phrase from results of the search;   determining that the frequently occurring word or phrase is not stored in the database as a keyword associated with the domain name; and   suggesting the frequently occurring word as a potential keyword.   
     
     
         23 . A computer-readable storage device storing instructions for managing keywords for a web page hosted at a website, the instructions causing one or more computer processors to perform operations, comprising:
 receiving a domain name for the website from a user;   receiving a keyword for the domain name from the user;   receiving a web page address corresponding to the keyword from the user; and   storing the keyword, the web page address, and the domain name in a database to associate the web page address, the keyword, and the domain name.   
     
     
         24 . A system for managing keywords for a web page hosted at a website, comprising:
 a processor; and   a memory coupled to the processor, the memory storing instructions to direct the processor to perform operations comprising:
 receiving a domain name for the website from a user, 
 receiving a keyword for the domain name from the user, 
 receiving a web page address corresponding to the keyword from the user, and 
 storing the keyword, the web page address, and the domain name in a database to associate the web page address, the keyword, and the domain name. 
   
     
     
         25 . The system of  claim 24 , the operations further comprising providing the user with computer-readable instructions that enable a search function of the website to communicate with the processor. 
     
     
         26 . The system of  claim 24 , the operations further comprising:
 receiving a keyword type for the keyword from the user; and   storing the keyword type in the database to associate the keyword type with the keyword.   
     
     
         27 . The system of  claim 24 , the operations further comprising:
 receiving a location from the user; and   storing the location in the database, such that the location is associated with the keyword and the URL.   
     
     
         28 . The system of  claim 24 , the operations further comprising:
 receiving a device type from the user; and   storing the device type in the database, such that the device type is associated with the keyword and the URL.   
     
     
         29 . The system of  claim 24 , the operations further comprising:
 receiving a description of the keyword from the user;   storing the description of the keyword in the database, the description being associated with the keyword;   receiving information identifying a social media account; and   sending a communication to the social media account, the communication including the description.   
     
     
         30 . The system of  claim 24 , the operations further comprising:
 receiving a description of the web page address;   storing the description of the web page address in the database, the description being associated with the web page address;   creating a data file from the data in the database, the data file including the domain name, the web page address, the description of the web page address, and keywords associated with the web page address and the domain name; and   making the data file available to a search function.   
     
     
         31 . The system of  claim 24 , the operations further comprising:
 searching web pages hosted at the domain name;   determining a frequently occurring word or phrase from results of the search;   determining that the frequently occurring word or phrase is not stored in the database as a keyword associated with the domain name; and   suggesting the frequently occurring word as a potential keyword.   
     
     
         32 . A computer-implemented method for directing a browser to a web page hosted at a website, comprising:
 receiving a request including a predetermined hostname from a user via the browser;   parsing the request for a domain name and a search string;   locating in a database a keyword associated with the domain name that matches the search string;   determining a web page address associated with the keyword; and causing the browser to be directed to the web page address.   
     
     
         33 . The method of  claim 32 , further comprising storing statistics about the keyword associated with the domain name. 
     
     
         34 . The method of  claim 33 , wherein the statistics include a number of times the search string has been parsed from a request comprising a predetermined hostname. 
     
     
         35 . The method of  claim 32 , further comprising:
 identifying a location of the request,   wherein determining the web page address associated with the keyword is dependent upon the location.   
     
     
         36 . The method of  claim 32 , further comprising:
 identifying a device type of the request,   wherein determining the web page address associated with the keyword is dependent upon the device type.   
     
     
         37 . A computer-readable storage device storing instructions for directing a browser to a web page hosted at a website, the instructions causing one or more computer processors to perform operations, comprising:
 receiving a request including a predetermined hostname from a user via the browser;   parsing the request for a domain name and a search string;   locating, in a database, a keyword associated with the domain name that matches the search string;   determining a web page address associated with the keyword; and   causing the browser to be directed to the web page address.   
     
     
         38 . A system for directing a browser to a web page hosted at a website, comprising:
 a processor; and   a memory coupled to the processor, the memory storing instructions to direct the processor to perform operations comprising:
 receiving a request including a predetermined hostname from a user via the browser, 
 parsing the request for a domain name and a search string, 
 locating in a database a keyword associated with the domain name that matches the search string, 
 determining a web page address associated with the keyword, and 
 causing the browser to be directed to the web page address. 
   
     
     
         39 . The system of  claim 38 , the operations further comprising storing statistics about the keyword associated with the domain name. 
     
     
         40 . The system of  claim 38 , the operations further comprising:
 identifying a location of the request,   wherein determining the web page address associated with the keyword is dependent upon the location.   
     
     
         41 . The system of  claim 38 , the operations further comprising:
 identifying a device type of the request,   wherein determining the web page address associated with the keyword is dependent upon the device type.   
     
     
         42 . A computer-implemented method for locating a website, comprising:
 receiving a search string entered by a user;   locating in a database a keyword matching the search string;   determining a domain name associated with the matching keyword;   determining a web page address associated with the matching keyword; and   generating data used to display the domain name, the web page address, and the matching keyword to the user.   
     
     
         43 . The method of  claim 42 , further comprising:
 determining a description for the web page address associated with the matching keyword; and   wherein the description is displayed as a hyperlink that causes a browser to navigate to a web page associated with the web page address.   
     
     
         44 . The method of  claim 43 , further comprising:
 receiving a selection of the hyperlink;   collecting and storing statistical data about the selection of the web page address; and   causing the browser to be directed to the web page associated with the web page address.   
     
     
         45 . The method of  claim 42 , further comprising:
 retrieving a plurality of keywords associated with the web page address; and   generating data used to display the domain name, the web page address, and the plurality of keywords associated with the web page address.   
     
     
         46 . The method of  claim 42 , further comprising:
 determining a plurality of keywords matching the search string; and   ranking the plurality of keywords using statistical data stored in the database,   wherein the retrieving and generating are performed for each of the plurality of keywords and the order of the displayed data is determined by the ranking.   
     
     
         47 . The method of  claim 42 , further comprising:
 receiving a domain name from the user,   wherein the locating further comprises locating a keyword matching the search string and associated with the domain name received from the user.   
     
     
         48 . The method of  claim 42 , further comprising collecting and storing statistical data about the matching keyword. 
     
     
         49 . A computer-readable storage device storing instructions for locating a website, the instructions causing one or more computer processors to perform operations, comprising:
 receiving a search string entered by a user;   locating in a database a keyword matching the search string;   determining a domain name associated with the matching keyword;   determining a web page address associated with the matching keyword;   retrieving a description for the web page address associated with the matching keyword; and   generating data used to display the domain name, the web page address, the description, and the matching keyword to the user, wherein the description is displayed as a hyperlink that causes a browser to be directed to a web page associated with the web page address.   
     
     
         50 . A system for locating a website, comprising:
 a processor; and   a memory coupled to the processor, the memory storing instructions to direct the processor to perform operations comprising:
 receiving a search string entered by a user, 
 locating in a database a keyword matching the search string, 
 determining a domain name associated with the matching keyword, 
 determining a web page address associated with the matching keyword, 
 retrieving a description for the web page address associated with the matching keyword, and 
 generating data used to display the domain name, the web page address, the description, and the matching keyword to the user, wherein the description is displayed as a hyperlink that causes a browser to be directed to a web page associated with the web page address. 
   
     
     
         51 . The system of  claim 50 , the operations further comprising:
 receiving a selection of the hyperlink;   collecting and storing statistical data about the selection of the web page address; and   causing the browser to be directed to the web page associated with the web page address.   
     
     
         52 . The system of  claim 50 , the operations further comprising:
 retrieving a plurality of keywords associated with the web page address; and   generating data used to display the domain name, the web page address, and the plurality of keywords associated with the web page address.   
     
     
         53 . The system of  claim 50 , the operations further comprising:
 determining a plurality of keywords matching the search string; and   ranking the plurality of keywords using statistical data stored in the database,   wherein the retrieving and generating are performed for each of the plurality of keywords and the order of the displayed data is determined by the ranking.   
     
     
         54 . The system of  claim 50 , the operations further comprising:
 receiving a domain name from the user,   wherein the locating further comprises locating a keyword matching the search string and associated with the domain name received from the user.
