Abstract

The teachings provided herein generally relate to formulations, systems, and methods that have the ability to remit deficiencies and imbalances in a subject's serotonin and dopamine levels. The teachings relate to the preparation and uses of a formulation comprising a serotonergic agent or dopaminergic agent in a form capable of oral transmucosal delivery to a subject. The formulation includes a flavoring agent and a carrier base. The flavoring agent functions as a taste indicator of the endpoint of a taste titration of the serotonergic or dopaminergic agent for a subject receiving an oral administration of the formulation in the form of a taste titration, and the endpoint is indicated to the subject by a change in the intensity of the flavor of the flavoring agent.

Claims

exact text as granted — not AI-modified
1 . A system for use in balancing neurotransmitter levels in a subject through a taste titration, the system comprising:
a serotonergic agent; a dopaminergic agent; and a titration component for facilitating a gradual oral transmucosal delivery of the serotonergic agent or dopaminergic agent to a subject to a serotonergic endpoint or a dopaminergic endpoint.

2 . The system of claim 1 , wherein the serotonergic agent or the dopaminergic agent comprises a hydroxylated aromatic acid monoamine precursor to serotonin or dopamine.

3 . The system of claim 1 , wherein the system comprises 5-hydroxytryptophan, levodopa, or a combination thereof.

4 . The system of claim 1 , wherein the serotonergic agent or the dopaminergic agent is administered in the form of a liquid to the subject's tongue or oral mucosa.

5 . The system of claim 1 , wherein the serotonergic agent or the dopaminergic agent is administered in the form of a solid to the subject's tongue or oral mucosa.

6 . A method for balancing neurotransmitter levels in a subject through a taste titration using the system of claim 1 , the method comprising:
orally administering the serotonergic agent to the serotonergic endpoint, wherein the serotonergic agent is gradually delivered to the subject oral transmucosally to identify a serotonergic dosage endpoint; and, identifying a change in flavor during the administering of the serotonergic agent as the serotonergic dosage endpoint; orally administering the dopaminergic agent, wherein the dopaminergic agent is gradually delivered to the subject oral transmucosally to identify a dopaminergic dosage endpoint; and, identifying a change in flavor during the administering of the dopaminergic agent as the dopaminergic dosage endpoint.

7 . The method of claim 6 , wherein orally administering includes administering the serotonergic agent or the dopaminergic agent in the form of a liquid to the subject's tongue or oral mucosa.

8 . The method of claim 6 , wherein the orally administering includes administering the serotonergic agent or the dopaminergic agent in the form of a solid to the subject's tongue or oral mucosa.

9 . The method of claim 6 , wherein the serotonergic agent or the dopaminergic agent comprises a hydroxylated aromatic acid monoamine precursor.

10 . The method of claim 6 , wherein the system comprises 5-hydroxytryptophan, levodopa, or a combination thereof.

11 . The method of claim 6 , wherein the method is used to ameliorate cravings in the treatment of an addictive disorder.

12 . The method of claim 6 , wherein the method is used to ameliorate withdrawal symptoms in the treatment of an addictive disorder.

13 . The method of claim 6 , wherein the method is used in the treatment of an affective disorder.

14 . The method of claim 6 , wherein the method is used in the treatment of an obsessive or compulsive disorder.

15 . The method of claim 6 , wherein the method is used in the treatment of an autoimmune disorder.

16 . The method of claim 6 , wherein the method is used in the treatment of an immune disorder.

17 . The method of claim 6 , wherein the method is used in the treatment of a neurodegenerative disorder.

18 . The method of claim 6 , wherein the method is used in the treatment of amyotrophic lateral sclerosis.

19 . The method of claim 6 , wherein the method is used in the treatment of fibromyalgia.

20 . A kit for balancing neurotransmitter levels in a subject, the kit comprising a serotonergic agent, a dopaminergic agent, and a dropper; the serotonergic agent and the dopaminergic agent each formulated for an independent, gradual oral transmucosal delivery with the dropper to a corresponding flavor endpoint which facilitates (i) a self-administration of the serotonergic agent and the dopaminergic agent by the subject to balance the neurotransmitter levels by providing (ii) an ease of identification by the subject of the amount of each agent to self-administer.
