Abstract
The present invention relates to a novel Paenibacillus polymyxa strain, OSY-DF, and its bioactive mutants. Also provided is a method for using a novel antimicrobial peptide, paenibacillin, isolated from the bacterial strain OSY-DF, and its bioactive variants or fragments. The invention also relates to antimicrobial compositions containing same and methods of their use.

45 . An isolated Paenibacillus polymyxa strain OSY-DF, registered under accession no. ATCC PTA-7852.
46 . A composition comprising a Paenibacillus polymyxa strain OSY-DF, registered under accession no. ATCC PTA-7852, a fermentate of a live culture of the OSY-DF, or a crude extract of a live culture of the OSY-DF.
47 . The composition of claim 46 , wherein said composition comprises the Paenibacillus polymyxa strain OSY-DF, registered under accession no. ATCC PTA-7852.
48 . The composition of claim 46 , wherein said composition comprises the fermentate of a live culture of the Paenibacillus polymyxa strain OSY-DF.
49 . The composition of claim 46 , wherein said composition comprises the crude extract of a live culture of the Paenibacillus polymyxa strain OSY-DF.
50 . The composition of claim 46 , wherein said composition is a pharmaceutical preparation suitable for treatment of bacterial infection in a subject, and wherein said composition further comprises a pharmaceutically acceptable carrier.
51 . The composition of claim 46 , wherein said composition is a pharmaceutical preparation suitable for prevention of bacterial colonization in a subject, and wherein said composition further comprises a pharmaceutically acceptable carrier.
52 . The composition of claim 46 , wherein said composition is a probiotic preparation suitable for oral administration to a subject.
53 . The composition of claim 46 , wherein said composition is suitable for use in controlling bacterial colonization of an environment.
54 . The composition of claim 53 , wherein said environment is a food product.
55 . The composition of claim 53 , wherein said environment is a non-biological surface.
56 . The composition of claim 46 , wherein said composition is suitable for use as a biocontrol agent for the control of plant pathogenic bacteria.
57 . A method of preventing or treating a bacterial infection in a subject, comprising administering to said subject an effective amount of a composition comprising a Paenibacillus polymyxa strain OSY-DF, registered under accession no. ATCC PTA-7852, a fermentate of a live culture of the OSY-DF, or a crude extract of a live culture of the OSY-DF.

The method of claim 57 , wherein the bacterial infection is caused by one or more Gram-positive bacteria selected from Bacillus spp., Clostridium sporogenes, Lactobacillus spp., Lactococcus lactis, Leuconostoc mesenteroides, Listeria spp., Pediococcus cerevisiae, Staphylococcus aureus, Streptococcus agalactiae , or combinations thereof.
59 . The method of claim 57 , wherein the bacterial infection is caused by one or more Gram-negative bacteria selected from Acinetobacter spp., Escherichia coli, Pseudomonas spp., Salmonella enterica serovars, Yersinia enterocolitica , or combinations thereof.
60 . The method of claim 57 , wherein the method of preventing or treating is prophylactic.
61 . A method for preventing or inhibiting the growth of bacteria on or inside an environment comprising introducing onto one or more surfaces of the environment an effective amount of a composition comprising a Paenibacillus polymyxa strain OSY-DF, registered under accession no ATCC PTA-7852, a fermentate of a live culture of the OSY-DF, or a crude extract of a live culture of the OSY-DF.
62 . The method of claim 61 , wherein the environment is selected from an organism, a food product, an agricultural crop, and a non-biological surface.
63 . The method of claim 61 , wherein the bacteria whose growth is to be prevented or inhibited comprise one or more Gram-positive bacteria selected from Bacillus spp., Clostridium sporogenes, Lactobacillus spp., Lactococcus lactis, Leuconostoc mesenteroides, Listeria spp., Pediococcus cerevisiae, Staphylococcus aureus, Streptococcus agalactiae , or combinations thereof.
64 .
