Protective cases for electronic devices

Abstract

In one embodiment of the invention, a case for electronic devices is provided. The case has a shell and a rotatable handled rotatably coupled to the shell. The shell is adapted to partially surround an electronic device. The shell includes a first shell portion and a second shell portion adapted to couple to the first shell portion. The first shell portion has a display opening to allow a user to view the electronic device. The shell may include a camera opening to allow images to be captured by the electronic device. The rotatable handle can couple to and decouple from the second shell portion of the shell. The rotatable handle allows the shell to rotate about an axis of rotation. The rotatable handle includes an extendable strap assembly to receive a hand of a user.

         23 . A case comprising: The case of claim  1 ,
 a shell adapted to partially surround an electronic device, the shell including a first shell portion and a second shell portion adapted to couple to the first shell portion, the first shell portion having a display opening to allow a user to view the electronic device and a first camera opening to allow images to be captured by the electronic device in a first direction; and   a rotatable handle adapted to couple to and decouple from the second shell portion of the shell, the rotatable handle adapted to allow the shell to rotate about an axis of rotation, the rotatable handle including an extendable strap assembly to receive a hand of the user; wherein
 the rotatable handle includes a retention bracket rotatably coupled to the shell and a handle bracket pivotally coupled to the retention bracket at one end, the handle bracket adapted to pivot away from the second shell portion to stand the case on a surface; and 
 the handle bracket further includes a slideable support end to extend out and retract in to adjust its length and an angle of the shell standing on a surface to view a display of an electronic device at different angles. 
   
     
     
         24 . The case of  claim 23 , wherein
 the handle bracket further has a pair of guide rails coupled to a surface along which the slideable support end can slide.   
     
     
         25 . The case of  claim 24 , wherein
 the surface of the handle bracket has a first groove and a second groove, and   the slideable support end has a flexible portion with a latch at an end, the latch to engage and disengage with the first and second grooves to hold the slideable support end respectively in a closed position or an extended position.   
     
     
         26 . The case of  claim 25 , wherein
 the flexible portion of the slideable support end has a finger tab to disengage the latch from the second groove.   
     
     
         27 . A case comprising:
 a shell adapted to partially surround an electronic device, the shell including a first shell portion and a second shell portion adapted to couple to the first shell portion, the first shell portion having a display opening to allow a user to view the electronic device and a first camera opening to allow images to be captured by the electronic device in a first direction; and   a rotatable handle adapted to couple to and decouple from the second shell portion of the shell, the rotatable handle adapted to allow the shell to rotate about an axis of rotation, the rotatable handle including an extendable strap assembly to receive a hand of the user, wherein the extendable strap assembly includes
 a cinch ring, and 
 a strap passed through the cinch ring and doubled back to selectively couple to itself to form an internal envelope with an adjustable size to receive the hand of the user. 
   
     
     
         28 . The case of  claim 27 , wherein
 the extendable strap assembly further includes
 a pull tab coupled to an end of the strap, the pull tab to selectively release the selective coupling and ease adjustment of the size of the internal envelope.

 the size of the internal envelope is increased by letting the strap out through the cinch ring.   
     
     
         30 . The case of  claim 28 , wherein
 the size of the internal envelope is decreased by pulling the strap in through the cinch ring.

 the shell further has at least one sound opening to allow sounds to pass through it.

 the at least one sound opening in the shell is a speaker opening to align over one or more speakers in an electronic device so that a user may hear sounds generated thereby.   
     
     
         33 . The case of  claim 32 , wherein
 another sound opening in the shell is a microphone opening to align over one or more microphones in an electronic device so that sounds are received thereby.   
     
     
         34 . The case of  claim 31 , wherein
 the shell further has at least one sensor opening to allow a sensor of the electronic device to sense something passing through the shell.   
     
     
         35 . The case of  claim 31 , wherein
 the at least one sensor opening is a light sensor opening to allow light to pass through the shell into a light sensor of the electronic device.   
     
     
         36 . A case comprising:
 a shell adapted to partially surround an electronic device, the shell including a first shell portion and a second shell portion adapted to couple to the first shell portion, the first shell portion having a display opening to allow a user to view the electronic device and a first camera opening to allow images to be captured by the electronic device in a first direction; and   a rotatable handle adapted to couple to and decouple from the second shell portion of the shell, the rotatable handle adapted to allow the shell to rotate about an axis of rotation, the rotatable handle including an extendable strap assembly to receive a hand of the user, wherein the first shell portion is further adapted to receive a flexible cover with one or more magnets, the flexible cover to cover over the display opening to protect the electronic device.   
     
     
         37 . The case of  claim 36 , wherein
 the first shell portion includes one or more openings to receive the one or more magnets of the flexible magnetic cover.   
     
     
         38 . The case of  claim 36 , wherein
 the first shell portion includes one or more metal strips to magnetically couple to the one or more magnets of the flexible magnetic cover.   
     
     
         39 . The case of  claim 36 , wherein
 the first shell portion includes one or more magnets with its poles aligned to magnetically couple to one or more magnets of the flexible magnetic cover.
