Pet harness with restraint

Abstract

The pet harness with restraint includes a rigid lateral bar or rod attached across the shoulder strap of a harness. The bar serves to prevent the animal from escaping between the vertical uprights of a fence or similar enclosure. The harness preferably comprises a pair of foreleg loops, a chest strap interconnecting the foreleg loops, and a pair of connecting straps that extend from the loops over the shoulders of the animal. Alternatively, the harness may comprise a collar portion and a body-encircling strap joined by longitudinal chest and dorsal straps. The bar may be permanently attached to across the shoulder or dorsal straps of the harness, but is preferably removable to provide a versatile harness. The bar may be attached to the harness by snap fasteners, by insertion into a sleeve attached to the harness, etc. The harness may include elastic sections therein to provide greater adjustment for growing pets.

1 . A pet harness with restraint, comprising:
 a strap assembly having a forward body-encircling portion including a lateral shoulder portion having a selectively openable closure;   a restraint mount disposed upon the lateral shoulder portion; and   an elongate, rigid restraint bar attached to the restraint mount, the bar extending laterally across the strap assembly, the bar being at least generally aligned with the lateral shoulder portion of the strap assembly.

         5 . The pet harness with restraint according to  claim 1 , further comprising an elastic sleeve permanently secured to the lateral shoulder portion of the strap assembly, the restraint bar being removably insertable into the elastic sleeve. 
     
     
         6 . The pet harness with restraint according to  claim 1 , further comprising:
 an elastic sleeve permanently secured to the lateral shoulder portion of the strap assembly, the elastic sleeve having mutually opposed first and second ends; and   first and second draw strings disposed in the sleeve adjacent the respective first and second ends, the restraint bar being removably insertable through the elastic sleeve, the restraint bar further including spaced apart first and second circumferential grooves therein, the draw strings of the elastic sleeve tightening within the grooves of the restraint bar to secure the restraint bar in place within the elastic sleeve.

The pet harness with restraint according to  claim 1 , further comprising first and second closure flaps permanently secured to the lateral shoulder portion of the strap assembly and extending laterally therealong, each of the flaps having first and second hook and loop fabric fastener material respectively disposed thereon, the restraint bar being removably installable between the closure flaps and the closure flaps securing together therearound, the restraint bar further including hook and loop fabric fastener material disposed thereon mating with at least one of the first and second hook and loop fabric fastener materials of the first and second closure flaps.

The pet harness with restraint according to  claim 1 , further comprising an elastic sleeve permanently secured to the lateral shoulder portion of the strap assembly, the sleeve having mutually opposed first and second ends, the restraint bar being removably insertable into the elastic sleeve, the restraint bar having mutually opposed first and second longitudinal discontinuities disposed toward the respective ends of the elastic sleeve when the restraint bar is removably installed therein.

         10 . A pet harness with restraint, comprising:
 a strap assembly having a forward body-encircling portion including a lateral shoulder portion having a selectively openable closure;   a restraint mount disposed upon the lateral shoulder portion; and   an elongate restraint bar removably attached to the restraint mount, the bar extending across the strap assembly.

         14 . The pet harness with restraint according to  claim 10 , further comprising an elastic sleeve permanently secured to the lateral shoulder portion of the strap assembly, the restraint bar being removably insertable into the elastic sleeve. 
     
     
         15 . The pet harness with restraint according to  claim 10 , further comprising:
 an elastic sleeve permanently secured to the lateral shoulder portion of the strap assembly, the elastic sleeve having mutually opposed first and second ends; and   first and second draw strings disposed in the sleeve, adjacent the respective first and second ends, the restraint bar being removably insertable through the elastic sleeve, the restraint bar having spaced apart first and second circumferential grooves therein, the draw strings of the elastic sleeve tightening within the grooves of the restraint bar to secure the restraint bar in place within the elastic sleeve.

The pet harness with restraint according to  claim 10 , further comprising first and second closure flaps permanently secured to the lateral shoulder portion of the strap assembly and extending laterally therealong, each of the flaps having first and second hook and loop fabric fastener material respectively disposed thereon, the restraint bar being removably installable between the closure flaps and the closure flaps securing together therearound, the restraint bar having hook and loop fabric fastener material disposed thereon mating with at least one of the first and second hook and loop fabric fastener materials of the first and second closure flaps.

The pet harness with restraint according to  claim 10 , further comprising, an elastic sleeve permanently secured to the lateral shoulder portion of the strap assembly, the sleeve having mutually opposed first and second ends, the restraint bar being removably insertable into the elastic sleeve, the restraint bar having mutually opposed first and second longitudinal discontinuities disposed toward the respective ends of the elastic sleeve when the restraint bar is removably installed therein.

         19 . A pet harness with restraint, comprising:
 a collar portion;   a body-encircling strap;   a chest strap connecting the collar portion and the body-encircling strap to one another;   a dorsal strap connecting the collar portion and the body-encircling strap to one another; and   an elongate, rigid restraint bar attached to the dorsal strap, the bar extending laterally across the dorsal strap, the bar being at least generally normal to the dorsal strap.   
     
     
         20 . The pet harness with restraint according to  claim 19 , wherein the restraint bar is disposed within a sleeve, the sleeve being permanently attached to the dorsal strap.
