Systems and methods for analysis of writing in documents

Abstract

Methods and systems are provided for analyzing and assessing documents using a writing profile for documents, such as a payment instrument. A method may include providing one or more documents to a computer system. In one embodiment, writing profile representations may be determined for information fields of the document. The determination may use writing from at least one of the information fields of one or more documents. Assessment may include comparing writing in the information fields of the document to writing profile representations from information fields of at least one other document.

         1093 . A method of assessing the validity of a document using a computer system, comprising:
 providing the document to the computer system, wherein the document comprises pre-printed information and one or more information fields comprising writing;   comparing, by the computer system, at least a portion of the pre-printed information of the document to at least one pre-printed profile representation;   comparing, by the computer system, at least a portion of the writing in at least one of the information fields of the document to one or more writing profile representations derived from writing in at least one information field of at least one other document, wherein the at least one of the writing profile representations has been stored in the computer system; and   assessing non-validity of the document provided to the computer system, wherein evidence of non-validity of the payment instrument comprises failure of at least a portion of the pre-printed information of the payment instrument to approximately match at least one pre-printed profile representation and failure of at least a portion of the writing to approximately match at least one of the one or more writing profile representations.   
     
     
         1094 . The method of  claim 1093 , wherein the document provided to the computer system comprises a payment instrument.

The method of  claim 1093 , wherein the document comprises a payment instrument, wherein comparing pre-printed information of the document to at least one pre-printed profile representation comprises comparing pre-printed information of the payment instrument to at least one document stock profile representation. 
     
     
         1096 . The method of  claim 1093 , wherein the document comprises a payment instrument, wherein the payment instrument comprises at least one machine-printed text block, the method further comprises:
 comparing, by the computer system, machine-printed text in at least one machine-printed text block of the payment instrument to one or more pre-printed profile representations, wherein evidence of non-validity of the document comprises failure of at least a portion of the machine-printed text in at least one machine-printed text block in the payment instrument to approximately match at least one of the one or more pre-printed profile representations.   
     
     
         1097 . The method of  claim 1093 , wherein comparing at least a portion of the writing in at least one of the information fields of the document to one or more writing profile representations comprises:
 comparing, by the computer system, handwriting in at least one signature information field of the document provided to the computer system to one or more writing profile representations from one or more signature information fields of at least one other document.   
     
     
         1098 . The method of  claim 1093 , wherein comparing at least a portion of the writing in at least one of the information fields of the document to one or more writing profile representations comprises:
 comparing, by the computer system, handwriting in at least one non-signature information field of the document provided to the computer system to one or more writing profile representations from one or more non-signature information fields of at least one other document.

The method of  claim 1093 , wherein the document provided to the computer system is a payment instrument, wherein comparing at least a portion of the pre-printed information of the document to at least one pre-printed profile representation comprises comparing, by the computer system, handwriting in at least one amount field of the document provided to the computer system to one or more writing profile representations from one or more amount fields of at least one other document 
     
     
         1100 . The method of  claim 1093 , the method further comprising:
 analyzing a correlation of information between two or more information fields of the document, wherein the analysis of a first information field of the payment instrument is dependent on what information is in a second information field of the document.   
     
     
         1101 . The method of  claim 1093 , wherein the document provided to the computer system comprises a payment instrument, the method further comprising:
 analyzing a correlation of information between two or more information fields of the document, wherein the analysis of a first information field of the document is dependent on what information is in a second information field of the document, and wherein the comparison of the pre-printed information in the document to the at least one pre-printed profile representation is based on the correlation analysis between the first information field and the second information field.   
     
     
         1102 . The method of  claim 1093 , wherein the document provided to the computer system comprises a payment instrument, the method further comprising:
 analyzing a correlation of information between an amount field in the document provided to the computer system and a payee field in the document provided to the computer system, wherein analyzing a correlation of information between the amount field in the document provided to the computer system and a payee field in the document provided to the computer system comprising analyzing the amount field of the document provided to the computer system based on what information is in the payee field of the document provided to the computer system.

The method of  claim 1093 , wherein assessing non-validity in the document provided to the computer system comprises performing two or more different fraud tests based on the comparison of one of the information fields, and assigning a different fraud weight to at least one of the fraud tests than to at least one other of the fraud tests. 
     
     
         1104 . The method of  claim 1093 , further comprising:
 identifying the document provided to the computer system as a document comprising forged information from one or more variances within writing within at least one information field, wherein the variances comprise written characters of the same type being written by at least two different individuals

The method of  claim 1104 , wherein the compared information field is an amount field, wherein determining variances in handwriting within the information field of the document provided to the computer system comprises determining that, in the amount field of the document provided to the computer system, at least one of the written characters of the same type is a number added by alteration by a forger.

The method of  claim 1105 , wherein the compared amount field is a courtesy amount field, wherein determining variances in handwriting within the information field of the document provided to the computer system comprises determining that, in the courtesy amount field of the document provided to the computer system, at least one of the written characters of the same type is a number added by alteration by a forger.

The method of  claim 1105 , wherein the compared amount field is a legal amount field, wherein determining variances in handwriting within the information field of the document provided to the computer system comprises determining that, in the legal amount field of the document provided to the computer system, at least one of the written characters of the same type is a number added by alteration by a forger. 
     
     
         1108 . A system, comprising:
 a CPU;   a data memory coupled to the CPU; and   a system memory coupled to the CPU, wherein the system memory is configured to store one or more computer programs executable by the CPU, and wherein the computer programs are executable to implement a method for assessing the validity of a document using a computer system, the method comprising:   providing the document to the computer system, wherein the document comprises pre-printed information and one or more information fields comprising writing;   comparing at least a portion of the pre-printed information of the document to at least one pre-printed profile representation;   comparing at least a portion of the writing in at least one of the information fields of the document to one or more writing profile representations derived from writing in at least one information field of at least one other document, wherein the at least one of the writing profile representations has been stored in the computer system; and   assessing non-validity of the document provided to the computer system, wherein evidence of non-validity of the payment instrument comprises failure of at least a portion of the pre-printed information of the payment instrument to approximately match at least one pre-printed profile representation and failure of at least a portion of the writing to approximately match at least one of the one or more writing profile representations.

The system of  claim 1108 , wherein the document comprises a payment instrument, wherein comparing pre-printed information of the document to at least one pre-printed profile representation comprises comparing pre-printed information of the payment instrument to at least one document stock profile representation. 
     
     
         1110 . The system of  claim 1108 , wherein the computer programs are further configured to implement:
 analyzing a correlation of information between two or more information fields of the document, wherein the analysis of a first information field of the payment instrument is dependent on what information is in a second information field of the document.   
     
     
         1111 . The system of  claim 1108 , wherein the computer programs are further configured to implement:
 performing two or more different fraud tests based on the comparison of one of the information fields, and   assigning a different fraud weight to at least one of the fraud tests than to at least one other of the fraud tests.   
     
     
         1112 . A tangible, computer readable storage medium comprising program instructions stored thereon, wherein the program instructions are computer-executable to implement a method for assessing the validity of a document using a computer system, the method comprising:
 providing the document to the computer system, wherein the document comprises pre-printed information and one or more information fields comprising writing;   comparing at least a portion of the pre-printed information of the document to at least one pre-printed profile representation;   comparing at least a portion of the writing in at least one of the information fields of the document to one or more writing profile representations derived from writing in at least one information field of at least one other document, wherein the at least one of the writing profile representations has been stored in the computer system; and   assessing non-validity of the document provided to the computer system, wherein evidence of non-validity of the payment instrument comprises failure of at least a portion of the pre-printed information of the payment instrument to approximately match at least one pre-printed profile representation and failure of at least a portion of the writing to approximately match at least one of the one or more writing profile representations.
