Abstract

Stereoscopic images may be represented in four coordinates where a first image is represented in three coordinates and a second image is represented of one coordinate. The brightness contrast is the property largely used in stereoscopic perception. The brightness and color of the first image is represented in three coordinates while the brightness of the second image is represented in the one coordinate. Color perception is dominated by the first image. A universal file format with four channels allows the stereoscopic images to be displayed as anaglyphs or as two full color images or as non-stereoscopic images. The anaglyphs may be rendered in three primary colors or four primary colors providing wide compatibility with traditional and specialized display apparatus. The universal file format facilitates methods to capture, display, convert, and communicate stereoscopic images.

1 . An apparatus configured for two-way communication of stereoscopic images, comprising:
 a stereoscopic camera apparatus, said camera configured to:
 capture first stereoscopic image pairs into first coordinates C 1 , C 2 , C 3 , Y L ;
 a first image of the first stereoscopic image pairs captured in first coordinates C 1 , C 2 , C 3 ; the brightness Y C  of the first image represented in the first coordinates C 1 , C 2 , C 3 ; and 
 a second image of the first stereoscopic image pairs captured in first coordinates Y L ; brightness Y Y  of the second image represented in coordinates Y L ; 
 
 transmit values in the first coordinates C 1 , C 2 , C 3 , Y L  of the captured stereoscopic image pairs using a transmitter apparatus; 
 receive second stereoscopic image pairs in second coordinates C 1 , C 2 , C 3 , Y L  using a receiver apparatus; and 
 display the second stereoscopic image pairs on a display apparatus, said display apparatus configured to provide primary colors P 1 , . . . , P m , Q 1 , . . . , Q n ; 
   said apparatus configured to:
 transform coordinates C 1 , C 2 , C 3  of the received second stereoscopic image pairs into primary color coordinates P 1 , . . . , P m  using transformation G 1 ; and 
 transform coordinates C 1 , C 2 , C 3 , Y L  of the received second stereoscopic image pairs into primary color coordinates Q 1 , . . . , Q n  using transformation G 2 . 
   
     
     
         2 . A cell phone, comprising:
 a stereoscopic camera apparatus, said camera configured to capture first stereoscopic image pairs;   said cell phone configured to:
 transmit the first stereoscopic image pairs; 
 receive second stereoscopic image pairs; and 
 display the second stereoscopic image pairs on a display screen.
