Portable device having multiple sensors for networked communication

Abstract

A portable device is provided having image and motion sensors, a controller and network interface. The image sensor images encoded tags printed on a surface. The tags encode identity data indicative of an identity associated with the surface. The motion sensor senses motion of the device relative to the surface. The controller controls decoding of the data of the imaged tags in accordance with the sensed device motion. The network interface communicates the data with a network.

1 . A portable device comprising:
 an image sensor for imaging encoded tags printed on a surface, the tags encoding identity data indicative of an identity associated with the surface;   a motion sensor for sensing motion of the device relative to the surface;   a controller for controlling decoding of the data of the imaged tags in accordance with the sensed device motion; and   a network interface for communicating the data with a network.   
     
     
         2 . A device according to  claim 1 , wherein the image sensor comprises a charge coupled device. 
     
     
         3 . A device according to  claim 1 , wherein the motion sensor comprises an accelerometer. 
     
     
         4 . A device according to  claim 1 , wherein the network interface is configured to wirelessly communicate with the network. 
     
     
         5 . A device according to  claim 1 , wherein the tags are printed using ink that is absorbent or reflective in the ultraviolet spectrum or the infrared spectrum, and the image sensor is configured to image the tags in the ultraviolet spectrum or the infrared spectrum.
