Abstract

A bioactive material is made using fibroin solutions and suspensions designed to support the constructions, repair, regeneration or augmentation of bone and other tissues of the body. The fibroin solutions, suspensions, and composites can be injected to fill cavities or to replace missing tissue. After injection, the materials can produce a scaffold capable of promoting tissue regeneration while degrading. The ability to inject the fibroin solutions, suspensions and composites can reduce the need for many types of surgical procedures that are used to replace or repair bone and other tissues. The fibroin solutions and suspensions are particularly useful for methods of tissue construction and/or repair.

What is claimed is: 
     
         1 . A method of tissue construction and/or repair, comprising administering to a site to be constructed and/or repaired a fibroin solution or suspension in an amount effective to stimulate tissue formation,
 wherein the fibroin solution or suspension is injectable and bioactive.   
     
     
         2 . The method of  claim 1 , wherein the fibroin suspension is in the form of an occlusion, a gel, a cream, or a paste. 
     
     
         3 . The method of  claim 1 , wherein the fibroin solution or suspension is injectable through a syringe needle having a diameter of 584 micrometers, 838 micrometers, or 2 millimeters. 
     
     
         4 . The method of  claim 1 , wherein the fibroin solution or suspension forms a matrix or scaffold at the site to be constructed that permits infiltration and growth of a cell used in tissue construction. 
     
     
         5 . The method of  claim 1 , wherein the fibroin is in the form of a suspension with at least one phase comprising a solvent and at least one phase comprising the fibroin. 
     
     
         6 . The method of  claim 1 , wherein the fibroin suspension further comprises at least one physiologically active agent. 
     
     
         7 . The method of  claim 6 , wherein the physiologically active agent comprises cells, antibiotics, bone morphogenic proteins, compounds that stimulate tissue growth, compounds that stimulate bone regeneration, compounds that stimulate wound repair, or a combination of one or more of the foregoing agents. 
     
     
         8 . The method of  claim 1 , wherein the site comprises a periodontal cavity, a site of tumor resection, a site of plastic surgery, or a cavity between a bone and a prosthesis. 
     
     
         9 . The method of  claim 8 , wherein the construction is bone repair, comprising cementing bone for a prosthesis, bone repair associated with osteoporosis, bone repair associated with osteoarthritis, bone repair of fractures, stabilization of a tooth implant, or a combination of one or more of the foregoing repairs. 
     
     
         10 . The method of  claim 1 , wherein administering is injecting. 
     
     
         11 . The method of  claim 1 , wherein administering is performed topically. 
     
     
         12 . A method of cartilage repair, comprising administering to a site in need of cartilage repair a fibroin solution or suspension in an amount effective to stimulate the cartilage repair,
 wherein the fibroin solution or suspension is injectable and bioactive.   
     
     
         13 . The method of  claim 12 , wherein the fibroin suspension is in the form of an occlusion, a gel, a cream, or a paste. 
     
     
         14 . The method of  claim 12 , wherein the fibroin solution or suspension is injectable through a syringe needle having a diameter of 584 micrometers, 838 micrometers, or 2 millimeters. 
     
     
         15 . The method of  claim 12 , wherein the fibroin solution or suspension forms a matrix or scaffold at the site to be constructed that permits infiltration and growth of a cell used in tissue construction. 
     
     
         16 . The method of  claim 12 , wherein the fibroin is in the form of a suspension with at least one phase comprising a solvent and at least one phase comprising the fibroin. 
     
     
         17 . The method of  claim 12 , wherein the fibroin suspension further comprises at least one physiologically active agent. 
     
     
         18 . The method of  claim 17 , wherein the physiologically active agent comprises cells, antibiotics, bone morphogenic proteins, compounds that stimulate tissue growth, compounds that stimulate bone regeneration, compounds that stimulate wound repair, or a combination of one or more of the foregoing agents. 
     
     
         19 . The method of  claim 12 , wherein administering is injecting.
