Abstract
An intervertebral fusion device for promoting fusion of first and second vertebrae comprises first and second endplate modules. Each endplate module includes an outer surface adapted to interface with vertebral bone and an opposite inner surface. The endplate modules further include an attachment feature. A central module is adapted to extend between the first and second endplate modules and is further adapted for connection with the attachment feature. A through passage extends through the outer and inner surfaces of the each of the first and second endplates and through the central module.

30 . An intervertebral fusion device for promoting fusion of first and second vertebrae, the device comprising:
first and second endplate modules, each including an outer surface adapted to interface with vertebral bone, an opposite inner surface, and an attachment feature; and a central module adapted to extend between the first and second endplate modules and further adapted for connection with the attachment feature, wherein a through passage extends through the outer and inner surfaces of the each of the first and second endplates and through the central module.
31 . The intervertebral fusion device of claim 30 further comprising at least one augmentation block adapted to attach to the first endplate module
32 . The intervertebral fusion device of claim 31 wherein the augmentation block is adapted to attach between the outer surface of the first endplate module and a keel extending from the outer surface of the first endplate module.
33 . The intervertebral fusion device of claim 32 wherein the augmentation block is wedge shaped.
34 . The intervertebral fusion device of claim 32 wherein the augmentation block has a side surface generally shaped to match a profile of the keel.
35 . The intervertebral fusion device of claim 32 wherein the augmentation block tapers from an upper surface of the keel toward the outer surface of the first endplate module.
36 . The intervertebral fusion device of claim 31 wherein the augmentation block at least partially extends into the through passage.
37 . An intervertebral fusion device for promoting fusion of first and second vertebrae, the device comprising:
an implant body; a first surface adapted to interface with the first vertebra; a second surface adapted to interface with the second vertebra; a keel extending from the first surface and adapted for insertion into the first vertebra; and an augmentation block adapted to interface with the first surface.
38 . The intervertebral fusion device of claim 37 wherein the interface between the augmentation block and the first surface is a coupling interface.
39 . The intervertebral fusion device of claim 37 wherein a through passage extends from the first surface through the second surface.
40 . The intervertebral fusion device of claim 37 wherein the augmentation block is wedge shaped.
41 . The intervertebral fusion device of claim 37 wherein the augmentation block has a side surface generally shaped to match a profile of the keel.
42 . The intervertebral fusion device of claim 37 wherein the augmentation block tapers from the keel toward the first surface.
43 . The intervertebral fusion device of claim 37 wherein the implant body has a lordotic angle between approximately 6 and 12 degrees.
44 . A method for promoting fusion of adjacent vertebrae, the method comprising:
removing a first intervertebral implant from an intervertebral space between the adjacent vertebrae wherein removing includes unseating a keel extension of the first intervertebral implant from a slot in at least one of the adjacent vertebrae; selecting a second intervertebral implant, wherein the second intervertebral implant includes first and second outer surfaces adapted to interface with the adjacent vertebrae; inserting the second intervertebral implant into the intervertebral space between the adjacent vertebrae wherein inserting includes positioning a keel extension of the second intervertebral implant into the slot in the at least one of the adjacent vertebrae; and depositing growth promoting material in a through passage extending from the first outer surface through the second outer surface.
45 . The method of claim 44 further comprising: inserting an augmentation block between the first outer surface and one of the adjacent vertebrae.
46 . The method of claim 44 wherein the step of removing the first vertebral implant includes accessing the intervertebral space with a lateral approach.
47 . The method of claim 44 wherein the step of removing the first vertebral implant includes accessing the intervertebral space with an anterior-oblique approach.
48 . The method of claim 44 wherein the second vertebral implant comprises at least three modules adapted for assembly within the intervertebral space.
