Abstract

A mermaid costume is disclosed. An exemplary mermaid costume may include a body portion configured to receive the feet and both legs of a user and conform substantially to the body of the user. The mermaid costume may also include a tail portion connected to the body portion. The tail portion together with the body portion provides the user with the appearance of a mermaid. An opening is formed in the body portion to enable two modes for wearing the costume.

1 . A mermaid costume, comprising:
 a body portion configured to receive the feet and both legs of a user and conform substantially to the body of the user;   a tail portion connected to the body portion, the tail portion together with the body portion provides the user with the appearance of a mermaid; and   an opening formed in the body portion to enable two modes for wearing the costume.   
     
     
         2 . The costume of  claim 1  wherein the two modes for wearing the costume include a swimming mode and a walking mode. 
     
     
         3 . The costume of  claim 2  wherein the feet of the user are entirely inside the body portion near the tail portion in the swimming mode. 
     
     
         4 . The costume of  claim 2  wherein the feet of the user are provided outside of the opening formed in the body portion in the walking mode. 
     
     
         5 . A mermaid costume, comprising:
 an outer-most layer that is both flexible and resilient;   an inner-most layer that conforms substantially to the body of a user to shape the lower portion of the user's body in the form of a mermaid; and   a body portion substantially maintaining the legs of the user together when worn by the user for swimming, the body portion enabling at least the feet of the user to be removed from the body portion for walking.   
     
     
         6 . The costume of  claim 5  further comprising an intermediate layer between the outer-most layer and the inner-most layer. 
     
     
         7 . The costume of  claim 5  further comprising a filler material configured to provide a desired shape to the mermaid costume. 
     
     
         8 . The costume of  claim 7  wherein the filler material is gel or foam. 
     
     
         9 . The costume of  claim 5  further comprising a tail portion. 
     
     
         10 . The costume of  claim 9  further comprising a non-skid layer on the tail portion. 
     
     
         11 . The costume of  claim 5  configurable for different users by adding or removing at least one layer. 
     
     
         12 . A light-weight mermaid costume, comprising:
 a body portion connected to a tail portion substantially in the form of a mermaid, the body portion including at least one opening formed through a back side, the opening enabling the user to quickly insert and remove the user's feet;   a first filler Material providing shape to the body portion, and a second filler material providing shape to the tail portion;   a water-resistant layer provided at least over the body portion.   
     
     
         13 . The costume of  claim 12  wherein at least some of the filler material is removable to adjust the body portion for different users. 
     
     
         14 . The costume of  claim 12  further comprising a plurality of layers for at least the body portion. 
     
     
         15 . The costume of  claim 12  wherein the body portion is stretchable to substantially conform to the body of the user. 
     
     
         16 . The costume of  claim 12  further comprising a separator in the body portion, the separator provided between at least a portion of the legs of the user. 
     
     
         17 . The costume of  claim 16  wherein the separator is attached to the body portion to reduce twisting of the body portion about the legs of the user. 
     
     
         18 . The costume of  claim 12  further comprising sock portions for receiving the feet of the user, the sock portions attached to a tail portion assisting in attaching the body portion to the user to reduce twisting of the body portion about the legs of the user. 
     
     
         19 . The costume of  claim 12  further comprising an elastic waist for the body portion to obviate the need for zippers or belts, thereby enhancing appearance. 
     
     
         20 . The costume of  claim 12  further comprising two openings formed in the body portion, wherein separate openings are provided for each foot.
