Abstract

Methods and compositions involving a class of boron-protected phenylphosphine agents having increased cell permeability and having improved chemical stability for treating or for preventing neuronal cell death-related diseases or conditions in a human or a non-human animal.

Claims

exact text as granted — not AI-modified
1 . A method for protecting a neuronal cell from cell death, the method comprising the step of:
exposing one or more neuronal cells to an effective amount of a pharmaceutical composition having a formula of:

wherein one of R 1 to R 3 is an aryl group or a substituted aryl group and two of R 1 to R 3 are CH 2 CH 2 COOCH 3 ; and
         a pharmaceutically acceptable carrier.

         2 . (canceled)

3 . The method of claim 1 , wherein the aryl group is a phenyl group and the substituted aryl group is a substituted phenyl group.

4 . The method of claim 1 , wherein the substituted aryl group comprises an aromatic ring directly linked to the phosphorus.

         5 - 8 . (canceled)

9 . The method of claim 1 , wherein the compound defined by the formula is bis(3-propionic acid methyl ester)phenylphosphine borane complex.

10 . The method of claim 1 , wherein the neuronal cells are neurons.

11 . The method of claim 10 , wherein the neurons are retinal ganglion cells.

12 . The method of claim 1 , wherein the neuronal cells are human or non-human animal neuronal cells.

13 . The method of claim 1 , wherein the neuronal cells are protected in vivo in a human or in a non-human animal.

         14 - 18 . (canceled)

         19 . A pharmaceutical composition comprising:
a compound having a formula of

         wherein one of R 1 -R 3 is an aryl group or a substituted aryl group and two of R 1 -R 3 are CH 2 CH 2 COOCH 3 ; and
         a pharmaceutically acceptable carrier.
