Abstract
Techniques for modifying a script portion of markup language documents are described. By modifying the script portion of markup language documents, access to resources residing on remote servers through an intermediate server is facilitated. The script portions can be modified at the intermediate server, client devices, or both.

22 . A method comprising:
identifying, by a network device, a script portion of a markup language document received at the network device from another network device, the script portion including a link to a resource of the other network device, where the link to the resource includes a hostname; and modifying the link by replacing the hostname with a replacement hostname that, when the resource is requested, via the modified link, by a client device, interposes the network device between the client device and the other network device to provide the resource to the client device.
23 . The method of claim 22 , further comprising:
delivering, by the network device and in response to receiving a request for the resource via the modified link, the resource to the client device.
24 . The method of claim 22 , where the identifying the script portion of the markup language document, further comprises:
scanning the markup language document to determine that the markup language document comprises the script portion; and determining that the script portion includes the hostname.
25 . The method of claim 22 , where the hostname is associated the other network device, and the replacement hostname is associated with the network device.
26 . The method of claim 22 , where the link comprises:
a Universal Resource Locator (URL) associated with the other network device, and where the modified link comprises:
a URL associated with the network device.
27 . The method of claim 22 , further comprising:
receiving a response from the other network device, the response including the markup language document; and determining the response to comprise a HyperText Markup Language (HTML) response.
28 . The method of claim 27 , where the modifying the link, further comprises:
processing the response through an application plug-in; and inserting a toolbar HTML into the markup language document, the toolbar including an activation script that, when executed is to:
determine whether the activation script is within a frame of a web page,
render, when the activation script determines that the activation script is not within a frame of the web page, a toolbar,
render, when the activation script determines that the activation script is within the frame of the web page and that the size of the frame is greater than a threshold size, the toolbar.
29 . A system comprising:
one or more network devices to:
receive a response to a request for content from another network device via a network, where the response includes a script portion including a link to content stored on the other network device;
one or more network devices to:
determine that the script portion includes a hostname; and
one or more network devices to:
replace the hostname with a replacement hostname, where the replacement hostname causes the one or more network devices, to be interposed between a client device and the other network device when the content is requested from the other network device via the network, by the client device.
30 . The system of claim 29 , further comprising:
one or more network devices to:
store the response, including the replacement hostname, to a data storage device, and
transmit, via the network, the response, including the replacement hostname, to the client device, when the content is requested by the client device.
31 . The system of claim 29 , further comprising:
one or more devices to:
determine that the response comprises a HyperText Markup Language (HTML) response.
32 . The system of claim 31 , further comprising:
one or more devices to:
insert, based on the determining the response to comprise the HTML response, toolbar HTML for rendering a toolbar within a web page, into the response, where the toolbar HTML includes an activation script to:
determine, when executed, whether the activation script is within a frame of the web page, and
render, when the activation script is determined not to be within the frame of the web page, the toolbar within the web page.
33 . The system of claim 32 , where the activation script is further to:
determine, when the activation script is determined to be within the frame of the web page, whether the frame of the web page comprises a frame size that is greater than a threshold size, and render, when the frame size is determined to be greater than the threshold size, the toolbar within the frame.
34 . The system of claim 31 , further comprising:
one or more devices to:
process the HTML response through an application plug-in to form resulting HTML,
scan the resulting HTML to identify a target Uniform Resource Locator (URL),
determine whether the target URL is a relative URL, and
append, when the target URL is determined not to be the relative URL, the replacement hostname to a hostname provided in the target URL.
35 . The system of claim 34 , further comprising:
one or more devices to:
determine, when the target URL is determined not to be the relative URL and prior to the appending, whether the target URL is associated with a secure request, and
append, when the target URL is determined not to be associated with a secure request, the predetermined hostname to the hostname provided in the target URL.
36 . A method comprising:
receiving, by a device and in response to a request for content, a markup language document from a different device; and inserting an activation script into the markup language document, where, when executed, the activation script is to:
determine whether the activation script is within a frame of a web page,
determine, when the activation script is determined to be within the frame of the web page, whether the frame comprises a frame size that is greater than a threshold size, and
render, when the frame size is determined to be greater than the threshold size, a toolbar within the frame of the web page.
37 . The method of claim 36 , where the activation script is further to:
render, when the activation script is determined not be within the frame of the web page, the toolbar into the web page.
38 . The method of claim 36 , further comprising:
processing, at the device, the markup language document through an application plug-in, and where the activation script is inserted during the processing.
39 . The method of claim 38 , where the processing the markup language document through the application plug-in, further comprises:
processing the markup language document through a plurality of application plug-ins.
40 . The method of claim 36 , where the inserting the activation script, further comprises:
inserting a plurality of activation scripts into each of a plurality of frames of the web page, and where each of the plurality of activation scripts is further to:
determine whether the activation script is within one of the plurality of frames of the web page,
determine, when the activation script is determined to be within the one of the plurality of frames of the web page, whether the one of the plurality of frames comprises a frame size that is greater than the threshold size, and
render, when the frame size is determined to be greater than the threshold size, the toolbar within the one of the plurality of frames of the web page.
41 . The method of claim 36 , where the toolbar includes a series of graphical links to be displayed by a browser of a client device, the method further comprising:
