Abstract

A composition including (a) a Platelet Activating Factor (PAF) Inhibitor and (b) an antioxidant which interferes with the arachidonic acid cascade and also has antioxidant activity. The composition is useful for the treatment or the relief of inflammatory diseases, thrombosis, cardiac problems, and/or conditions caused by platelet induced blood clotting.

1 . A composition comprising  ginkgo biloba , or an extract or component thereof, apocynin, wherein the mass ratio of  ginkgo biloba :apocynin is from about 3:10 to 3.4:1, and an agent which enhances lipid solubility of the composition. 
     
     
         2 . A composition according to  claim 1 , wherein the agent is phosphatidylcholine. 
     
     
         3 . A composition according to  claim 1  which further comprises dimethylsulfone. 
     
     
         4 . A composition according to  claim 1  comprising  ginkgo biloba  and apocynin; wherein the ratio by mass of  ginkgo biloba :apocynin is between about 0.5:1 to about 3:1. 
     
     
         5 . A composition according to  claim 4 , wherein the ratio by mass of  ginkgo biloba :apocynin is between about 1:1 and about 3:1. 
     
     
         6 . A pharmaceutical preparation comprising a composition according to  claim 1 . 
     
     
         7 . A pharmaceutical preparation according to  claim 6  for the treatment or the relief of inflammatory diseases, thrombosis, cardiac problems, and/or conditions caused by platelet induced blood clotting. 
     
     
         8 . A pharmaceutical preparation according to  claim 6  for the treatment or the relief of inflammatory respiratory diseases. 
     
     
         9 . A veterinary preparation comprising a composition according to  claim 1 . 
     
     
         10 . A veterinary preparation according to  claim 9  for the treatment or the relief of inflammatory diseases, thrombosis, cardiac problems, and/or conditions caused by platelet induced blood clotting, in a non-human animal. 
     
     
         11 . A pharmaceutical composition comprising  ginkgo biloba , or an extract or component thereof, apocynin, wherein the mass ratio of  ginkgo biloba :apocynin is from about 3:10 to 60:1, and an agent which enhances lipid solubility of the composition. 
     
     
         12 . A pharmaceutical composition according to  claim 11 , wherein the agent is phosphatidylcholine. 
     
     
         13 . A pharmaceutical composition according to  claim 11  which further comprises dimethylsulfone. 
     
     
         14 . A pharmaceutical composition according to  claim 11 , wherein the ratio by mass of  ginkgo biloba:apocynin is between about  6:1 and about 0.4:1. 
     
     
         15 . An orally active pharmaceutical preparation for the treatment of inflammatory respiratory diseases comprising  ginkgo biloba , apocynin, wherein the mass ratio of  ginkgo biloba :apocynin is about 3:10 to 60:1, and an agent which enhances lipid solubility of the composition. 
     
     
         16 . An orally active pharmaceutical preparation according to  claim 15  for the treatment of asthma. 
     
     
         17 . A kit containing a preparation for treating or preventing an inflammatory disease, thrombosis, cardiac problems and/or conditions caused by platelet induced blood clotting in a human or non-human animal subject, comprising at least one dose of  ginkgo biloba , or an extract or component thereof, at least one dose of apocynin, wherein the mass ratio of  ginkgo biloba :apocynin in said doses of  ginkgo biloba , or an extract or component thereof, and apocynin is 3:10 to 60:1, and an agent which enhances lipid solubility of the composition. 
     
     
         18 . A composition according to  claim 4 , wherein the mass ratio of  ginkgo biloba :apocynin is from about 2.1:1 to about 2.7:1. 
     
     
         19 . A pharmaceutical composition comprising apocynin, picrorrhiza kurroa,  ginkgo biloba , or an extract or component thereof, wherein the mass ratio of  ginkgo biloba :apocynin is from about 3:10 to 60:1, and an agent which enhances lipid solubility of the composition. 
     
     
         20 . A composition according to  claim 1 , consisting essentially of  ginkgo biloba , or an extract of component thereof, apocynin and said agent. 
     
     
         21 . A composition according to  claim 1 , consisting of  ginkgo biloba , or an extract or component thereof, apocynin, said agent and, optionally, at least one of picrorrhiza kurroa and dimethylsulfone. 
     
     
         22 . A pharmaceutical composition according to  claim 11 , consisting essentially of  ginkgo biloba , or an extract or component thereof, apocynin and said agent. 
     
     
         23 . A pharmaceutical composition according to  claim 11 , consisting of  ginkgo biloba , or an extract or component thereof, apocynin, said agent and, optionally, at least one of picrorrhiza kurroa and dimethylsulfone. 
     
     
         24 . An orally active pharmaceutical preparation according to  claim 15 , consisting essentially of  ginkgo biloba , or an extract of component thereof, apocynin and said agent. 
     
     
         25 . An orally active pharmaceutical preparation according to  claim 15 , consisting of  ginkgo biloba , or an extract or component thereof, apocynin said agent and, optionally, at least one of picrorrhiza kurroa and dimethylsulfone. 
     
     
         26 . A kit according to  claim 17 , wherein the preparation consists essentially of  ginkgo biloba , or an extract or component thereof, apocynin and said agent. 
     
     
         27 . A kit according to  claim 17 , wherein the preparation consists of  ginkgo biloba , or an extract or component thereof, apocynin, said agent and, optionally, at least one of picrorrhiza kurroa and dimethylsulfone. 
     
     
         28 . The orally active pharmaceutical preparation according to  claim 15 , wherein the agent that enhances lipid solubility is phosphatidylcholine. 
     
     
         29 . The kit of  claim 17 , wherein the agent that enhances lipid solubility is phosphatidylcholine. 
     
     
         30 . A pharmaceutical composition according to  claim 19 , wherein the agent that enhances lipid solubility is phosphatidylcholine.
