. A method of treating an infection, comprising:
administering to a patient by inhalation, a formulation comprising a carrier and an antidepressant selected from the group consisting of a tricyclic antidepressant, and a tetracyclic antidepressant.

. The method of claim 19 , wherein the antidepressant is a tricyclic antidepressant.

. The method of claim 19 , wherein the antidepressant is a tetracyclic antidepressant.

. The method of claim 19 , wherein the antidepressant is selected from the group consisting of amitryptiline and imipramine.

. The method of claim 19 , wherein the formulation comprises amitryptiline.

. The method of claim 19 , wherein the formulation comprises imipramine.

. The method of claim 19 , wherein the infection is an HIV infection.

. A method of treating cystic fibrosis, comprising:
administering to a cystic fibrosis patient by inhalation, a formulation comprising an antidepressant selected from the group consisting of a tricyclic antidepressant, and a tetracyclic antidepressant.

. The method of claim 26 , wherein the antidepressant is a tricyclic antidepressant.

. The method of claim 26 , wherein the antidepressant is a tetracyclic antidepressant.

. The method of claim 26 , wherein the antidepressant is selected from the group consisting of amitryptiline and imipramine.

. The method of claim 26 , wherein the formulation comprises amitryptiline.

. The method of claim 26 , wherein the formulation comprises imipramine.

. A method of treating an infection, comprising:
administering to a patient by inhalation, a formulation consisting essentially of a carrier and an antidepressant selected from the group consisting of a tricyclic antidepressant, and a tetracyclic antidepressant.

. The method of claim 32 , wherein the antidepressant is a tricyclic antidepressant.

. The method of claim 32 , wherein the antidepressant is a tetracyclic antidepressant.

. The method of claim 32 , wherein the antidepressant is selected from the group consisting of amitryptiline and imipramine.

. The method of claim 32 , wherein the antidepressant is amitryptiline.

. The method of claim 32 , wherein the antidepressant is imipramine.

. The method of claim 32 , wherein the infection is an HIV infection.
