Abstract
A system for receiving a digital broadcast includes an input terminal that receives the digital broadcast containing scalable data, and a controller for controlling an operation mode of the system. In addition, the system may also include a processor that decodes the data, and a power management device that varies the amount of data to be decoded according to the operation mode.

an input terminal that receives the digital broadcast containing scalable data; a controller for controlling an operation mode of the system; a processor that decodes the data; and a power management device that varies the amount of data to be decoded according to the operation mode.
2 . The system of claim 1 , wherein the power management device is that varies the amount of data to be received by the input terminal.
3 . The system of claim 1 , wherein the system is a handheld device operable with a battery power.
4 . The system of claim 1 , wherein the scalable data comprises data coded with a fine grain scalability coding.
5 . The system of claim 1 , wherein the operation mode is selected based on at least one of a total battery capacity, a remaining battery capacity, a user's instructions, and a quality of service selected.
6 . The system of claim 1 , wherein varying the amount of the data to be decoded comprises activating the processor at least during the intervals when the most significant portion of the scalable data is to be processed.
7 . The system of claim 1 , wherein varying the amount of the data to be decoded comprises deactivating the processor at least during the intervals when the least significant portion of the scalable data is present.
8 . The system of claim 1 , wherein the digital broadcast comprises multiple bandwidth channels each having at least two services.
9 . A power management method for a receiving system of a digital broadcast, the method comprising:
providing the digital broadcast containing scalable data; selecting an operation mode of the system; and varying the amount of data to be processed by the receiving system according to the operation mode selected.
10 . The method of claim 9 , wherein the receiving system comprises a handheld device operable with a battery power.
11 . The method of claim 9 , wherein the scalable data comprises data coded with a fine grain scalability coding.
12 . The method of claim 9 , wherein the operation mode is selected based on at least one of a battery capacity, a remaining battery capacity, a user's instructions, and a quality of service selected.
13 . The method of claim 9 , wherein varying the amount of data to be processed comprises activating a processing at the receiving system at least during the intervals corresponding to the most significant portion of the scalable data.
14 . The method of claim 9 , wherein varying the amount of data to be processed comprises deactivating a processing at the receiving system at least during the intervals corresponding to the least significant portion of the scalable data.
15 . The method of claim 9 , wherein the digital broadcast comprises multiple bandwidth channels each having at least two services.
16 . The method of claim 15 , wherein varying the amount of data to be processed comprises activating a processing at the receiving system at least during the intervals corresponding to the most significant portion of each frame belonging to a service selected.
17 . The method of claim 15 , wherein the data of the at least two services are placed at distinct time intervals.
