Scotch yoke engine or pump

Abstract

A scotch yoke engine or pump with a female Vee land means ( 2 a ) extending parallel to the cylinder axis ( 1 ) of cylinder ( 11 ) and including two surfaces, the first planar surface extending parallel to a first plane, and the second planar surface extending parallel to a second plane, the first plane and the second plane being at an angle to each other, a third guide means ( 4 a ) including two surfaces extending parallel to the cylinder axis, the first surface extending parallel to the first plane and the second surface extending parallel to the second plane; a fastener means ( 6 a ) such as a bolt or stud adapted to fasten the third guide means into a corner ( 20 a ) of the Vee land, the Vee land located in the axial foot print of the cylinder.

A scotch yoke engine or pump which includes: a cylinder having a cylinder axis, the cylinder axis extending perpendicular relative to a crankshaft main axis; a block for the engine or pump including at least one land means, the land means including two surfaces, a first surface which extends parallel to the cylinder axis and along a first plane and a second surface which extends parallel to the cylinder axis and along a second plane, the first plane and the second plane being at an angle to each other; third guide means including a first surface which extends parallel to the cylinder axis and along the first plane and a second surface which extends parallel to the cylinder axis and along the second plane, the first plane and the second plane being at an angle to each other; fastener means adapted to pull the third guide means first surface and second surfaces into frictional engagement with the first surface and the second surface of the land means respectively; the lands means being located within an axial projection of the cylinder wall, the projection of the cylinder wall being towards the main axis; the crankshaft mounted for rotation relative to the block 
     
     
         2 . A scotch yoke engine or pump which includes: a cylinder having a cylinder axis, the cylinder axis extending perpendicular relative to a crankshaft main axis; a block including land means, the land means including a male or a female arcuate land means including an arcuate land surface, the arcuate land surface extending parallel to.the cylinder axis and adapted to engage the back side surface arrangement of a third guide means, the third guide means back side surface being of the opposite sex to the land means surface; the crankshaft mounted for rotation relative to the block. 
     
     
         3 . A scotch yoke engine or pump including a cylinder having a cylinder axis extending perpendicular relative to a crankshaft main axis; the crankshaft including a first big end bearing means having a first big end bearing means axis located at a first distance from the main axis, and the crankshaft including a second big end bearing means having a second big end bearing means axis located at a second distance from the first big end bearing means axis from the main axis, the second distance being less than the first distance; the first big end bearing means axis and the second big end bearing means axis being located on the same side of the main axis and on a line which is radial to the main axis; a piston mounted for reciprocation along the cylinder axis, the piston being a first reciprocatable mass; the piston including first guide means elongate along an axis which extends substantially perpendicular relative to the cylinder axis; a Second reciprocatable mass including a second first guide means extending along an axis which is perpendicular relative to the main axis and being substantially perpendicular relative to the cylinder axis; the second reciprocatable mass being compensatingly more massy than the first reciprocatable mass such that in effect the first reciprocatable mass inertia when reciprocated and the first reciprocatable mass inertia when reciprocated are equivalent to a single mass having the mass of the first reciprocatable mass moving in an elipse, the elipse centered on the main axis or along the bisector of the incgled angle exisant between the cylinder axis and the axis along which the second reciprocatable mass reciprocates. 
     
     
         4 . A scotch yoke engine according to  claim 3  but wherein the first reciprocatable mass is connected to the first big end bearing means by a connecting rod; and wherein a portion of the mass of the connecting rod is added into the equation for the mass of the first reciprocating mass. 
     
     
         5 . A scotch yoke engine or pump according to  claim 3  but wherein the second big end bearing means axis is located on the opposite side of the main axis than is the first big end bearing means axis; and wherein the second reciprocatable member is adapted to be reciprocated along an axis extend substantially parallel to the cylinder axis; and wherein the inertia of the first reciprocatable mass when it is reciprocated and the inertia of the second reciprocatable mass when its is reciprocated balance each other out across the main axis.
