Abstract

A non-toxic environmentally friendly aqueous disinfectant is disclosed for specific use as prevention against contamination by potentially pathogenic bacteria and virus. The aqueous disinfectant is formulated by electrolytically generating silver ions in water in combination with a citric acid. The aqueous disinfectant may include a suitable alcohol and/or a detergent. The aqueous disinfectant has been shown to be very effective at eliminating standard indicator organisms such as staphylococcus aureus, salmonella cholerasuis and pseudomonas aeruginosa.

1 . An antimicrobial aqueous solution comprising greater than 1% wt/vol citric acid, a disinfectant amount of a complex having the formula Ag + CA − . 
     
     
         2 . The aqueous solution of  claim 1 , which further contains an alcohol. 
     
     
         3 . The aqueous solution of  claim 2 , wherein the alcohol is ethanol. 
     
     
         4 . The aqueous solution of  claim 1 , which further contains a detergent. 
     
     
         5 . The aqueous solution of  claim 4 , wherein the detergent is sodium dodecyl sulfate. 
     
     
         6 . The aqueous solution of  claim 1 , which further contains both a detergent and an alcohol. 
     
     
         7 . The aqueous solution of  claim 6 , wherein the alcohol is ethanol and the detergent is sodium dodecyl sulfate. 
     
     
         8 . A method to protect an exposed surface from contamination by bacteria, virus and/or fungi, which method comprises applying an amount of the solution of  claim 1  to said surface sufficient for such protection. 
     
     
         9 . A method to protect a dermal wound site or lesion from contamination by bacteria, virus and/or fungi, which method comprises applying an amount of the solution of  claim 1  to said wound site or lesion sufficient for such protection.
