Fastener device for fastening two components
Abstract
A first and second component joint includes using a fastener having a first end, and a flange having a diameter greater than a tubular barrel portion. A second end having a second tubular barrel portion merges into a shoulder of a flange part having a greater diameter than the barrel portion. The first tubular barrel portion is deformed radially outwardly sandwiching the first component between the flange and the first barrel portion. The second end of the fastener is introduced through a hole in the second component by applying the second component to the first component so the shoulder of the flanged part abuts the second component spacing the second component from the first component. The fastener device is fastened to the second component by deforming the second tubular barrel portion radially outwardly sandwiching the second component between the shoulder and the tubular barrel portion.
Claims
exact text as granted — not AI-modified1 . A method of forming a component assembly comprising a fastener element and first and second components, said fastener element having a body portion with an associated thread for receiving a mating threaded, fastener, a first end having a radial shoulder, a tubular rivet section projecting from said body portion radially within said radial shoulder, and having a non-threaded inner surface and a second end having a radial face, said first component having a recess with a planar base and a hole therein and said second component having a hole therein smaller than said radial face, the method comprising the steps of:
inserting said tubular rivet section which initially has a non-threaded inner surface through said hole in said first component and deforming it using a die to provide a rivet bead trapping said first component between said rivet bead and said radial shoulder, positioning said second component against said radial face with said hole in said second component aligned therewith and forming first and second welds joining said first component having said recess to said second component at positions outside of said recess.
2 . A method in accordance with claim 1 wherein said second end of said body is bonded at said radial face to said second component.
3 . A method in accordance with claim 2 wherein said second end of said body is adhesively bonded to said second component.
4 . A method in accordance with claim 1 and including the step of forming the fastener element as a nut element having a threaded bore for receiving a mating threaded bolt fastener adapted to cooperate with said fastener element to secure a third component to said component assembly and in contact with a side of said second component remote from said nut element.
5 . A component assembly comprising a fastener element and first and second components, said fastener element having a body portion with an associated thread for receiving a mating threaded fastener, a first end having a radial shoulder, a tubular rivet section projecting from said body portion radially within said radial shoulder, and a second end having a radial face, said first component having a recess with a planar base and a hole therein and said second component having a hole therein smaller than said radial face, wherein said tubular rivet section which initially has a non-threaded surface extends through said hole in said first component and has been deformed by a die to provide a rivet bead trapping said first component between said rivet bead and said radial shoulder, said second component being positioned against said radial face with said hole in said second component aligned therewith and first and second welds joining said first component having said recess to said second component at positions outside of said recess.
6 . A component assembly in accordance with claim 5 wherein said second end of said body is bonded to said second component.
7 . A component assembly in accordance with claim 6 wherein said second end of said body is adhesively bonded to said second component.
8 . A component assembly in accordance with claim 5 , wherein said fastener element is a nut element having a threaded bore and the component assembly further comprises a threaded bolt fastener and a third component having a hole therein with said threaded bolt fastener extending through said hole in said third component and engaging said threaded bore while securing said third component to said component assembly and in contact with a side of said second component remote from said nut element.Join the waitlist — get patent alerts
