Claims

Abstract

A thixotropy imparting composition. The composition comprises the reaction products of: one or more polyesters from one or more polyols having at least two hydroxyl moieties; and one or more polycarboxylic acids having at least two carboxylic acid moieties; and one or more basic compounds, wherein said polyesters have at least two active carboxylic acid moieties as end groups and at least a portion of said carboxylic acid moieties are in the carboxylate anion form. This composition may further comprise one or more diluents. The composition exists as a liquid. The composition may be used in a non-aqueous fluid system as a rheological additive in combination with one or more particulate materials, wherein said rheological additive imparts thixotropy to said system. A thixotropy imparting composition. The composition comprises the reaction products of: one or more polyesters from one or more polyols having at least two hydroxyl moieties; and one or more polycarboxylic acids having at least two carboxylic acid moieties; wherein said polyesters have at least two active carboxylic acid moieties as end groups. This composition may further comprise one or more diluents. The composition may exist as a liquid. The composition may be used in a non-aqueous fluid system as a rheological additive in combination with one or more particulate materials, wherein said rheological additive imparts thixotropy to said system.

1 . A thixotropy imparting composition comprising the reaction products of:
 one or more polyesters comprised of:
 one or more polyols having at least two hydroxyl moieties; and one or 
 more polycarboxylic acids having at least two carboxylic acid moieties; 
   and one or more basic compounds,   wherein said polyesters have at least two active carboxylic acid moieties as end groups and at least a portion of said carboxylic acid moieties are in the carboxylate anion form.   
     
     
         2 . The thixotropy imparting composition of  claim 1 , wherein said basic compound is selected from the group consisting of alkali metal bases, alkaline earth bases and amines. 
     
     
         3 . The thixotropy imparting composition of  claim 1 , wherein said polyol comprises glycerol. 
     
     
         4 . The thixotropy imparting composition of  claim 1 , wherein said polycarboxylic acids comprise a polycarboxylic acid having from 18 to 54 carbon atoms. 
     
     
         5 . The thixotropy imparting composition of  claim 1 , wherein said polycarboxylic acid comprises one of the following: a dimer acid having 32 to 36 carbon atoms, a trimer acid having 48 to 54 carbon atoms, and mixtures thereof. 
     
     
         6 . The thixotropy imparting composition of  claim 1 , wherein said polycarboxylic acid has from 2 to 6 carboxylic acid moieties. 
     
     
         7 . The thixotropy imparting composition of  claim 1 , wherein said polyester has a hydroxyl moiety to carboxylic acid moiety ratio ranging from 1.8:1 to 3.0:1. 
     
     
         8 . The thixotropy imparting composition of  claim 1 , wherein said thixotrope composition further comprises a liquid diluent. 
     
     
         9 . The thixotropy imparting composition of  claim 2 , wherein said one or more basic compounds comprises potassium hydroxide. 
     
     
         10 . A thixotropy imparting composition comprising:
 one or more polyesters comprised of the reaction products of:
 one or more of a polyols having at least two hydroxyl moieties; and 
 one or more of a polycarboxylic acids having at least two carboxylic acid moieties; 
   one or more basic compounds, and further comprising   one or more diluents   wherein said polyesters have at least two active carboxylic acid moieties as end groups and at least a portion of said carboxylic acid moieties are in the carboxylate anion form.   
     
     
         11 . The thixotropy imparting of  claim 10 , wherein said basic compound is selected from the group consisting of alkali metal bases, alkaline earth bases and amines. 
     
     
         12 . The thixotropy imparting of  claim 10 , wherein said polyol comprises glycerol. 
     
     
         13 . The thixotropy imparting of  claim 10 , wherein said polycarboxylic acids comprise a polycarboxylic acid having from 18 to 54 carbon atoms. 
     
     
         14 . The thixotropy imparting of  claim 10 , wherein said polycarboxylic acid comprises one of the following: a dimer acid having 32 to 36 carbon atoms, a trimer acid having 48 to 54 carbon atoms, and mixtures thereof. 
     
     
         15 . The thixotropy imparting of  claim 10 , wherein said polycarboxylic acid has from 2 to 6 carboxylic acid moieties. 
     
     
         16 . The thixotropy imparting of  claim 11 , wherein said polyester has a hydroxyl moiety to carboxylic acid moiety ratio ranging from 1.8:1 to 3.0:1. 
     
     
         17 . The thixotropy imparting of  claim 10 , wherein said one or more basic compounds comprises potassium hydroxide. 
     
     
         18 . The thixotropy imparting of  claim 10 , wherein said diluent is selected from the group consisting of: toluene, xylene, butyl Carbitol, butyl triglycol, hexyl Carbitol, hexyl triglycol, N-methylpyrrolidone, ethyl acetate, butyl acetate, methyl ethyl ketone, and butanol, polyethylene oxides monoethers, polyethylene oxides monoesters, triglycerides, oils and high boiling alcohols, nonionic surfactants.

         30 . A thixotropy imparting composition comprising:
 one or more polyesters comprised of:
 one or more polyols having at least two hydroxyl moieties; and 
 one or more polycarboxylic acids having at least two carboxylic acid moieties; 
 wherein in said polyesters, said polyesters have at least two active carboxylic acid moieties as end groups.

The thixotropy imparting composition of  claim 30 , wherein a portion of said carboxylic acid moieties have been converted to carboxylate anion moieties by reaction with one or more basic compounds selected from the group consisting of alkali metal bases, alkaline earth bases and amines. 
     
     
         32 . The thixotropy imparting composition of  claim 30 , wherein a polyol comprises 1,6-hexanediol. 
     
     
         33 . The thixotropy imparting composition of  claim 30 , wherein a polycarboxylic acid has from 18 to 54 carbon atoms. 
     
     
         34 . The thixotropy imparting composition of  claim 30 , wherein a polycarboxylic acid comprises one of the following: a dimer acid having 32 to 36 carbon atoms, a trimer acid having 48 to 54 carbon atoms, and mixtures thereof. 
     
     
         35 . The thixotropy imparting composition of  claim 30 , wherein said polycarboxylic acid has from 2 to 6 carboxylic acid moieties. 
     
     
         36 . The thixotropy imparting composition of  claim 30 , wherein said polyester has a hydroxyl moiety to carboxylic acid moiety ratio ranging from 0.5:1 to 0.9:1. 
     
     
         37 . The thixotropy imparting composition of  claim 30 , wherein said composition further comprises a liquid diluent. 
     
     
         38 . The thixotropy imparting composition of  claim 31 , wherein said one or more basic compounds comprises potassium hydroxide. 
     
     
         39 . A thixotropy imparting composition comprising: one or more polyesters comprised of: one or more polyols having at least two hydroxyl moieties; and one or more polycarboxylic acids having at least two carboxylic acid moieties; wherein said polyester has at least two active carboxylic acid moieties as end groups; and one or more diluents.

The thixotropy imparting composition of  claim 39 , wherein a portion of said carboxylic acid moieties have been converted to carboxylate anion moieties by reaction with one or more basic compounds selected from the group consisting of alkali metal bases, alkaline earth bases and amines. 
     
     
         41 . The thixotropy imparting composition of  claim 39 , wherein a polyol comprises 1,6-hexanediol. 
     
     
         42 . The thixotropy imparting composition of  claim 39 , wherein a polycarboxylic acid has from 18 to 54 carbon atoms. 
     
     
         43 . The thixotropy imparting composition of  claim 39 , wherein a polycarboxylic acid comprises one of the following: a dimer acid having 32 to 36 carbon atoms, a trimer acid having 48 to 54 carbon atoms, and mixtures thereof. 
     
     
         44 . The thixotropy imparting composition of  claim 39 , wherein said polycarboxylic acid has from 2 to 6 carboxylic acid moieties. 
     
     
         45 . The thixotropy imparting composition of  claim 39 , wherein said polyester has a hydroxyl moiety to carboxylic acid moiety ratio ranging from 0.5:1 to 0.9:1. 
     
     
         46 . The thixotropy imparting composition of  claim 40 , wherein said one or more basic compounds comprises potassium hydroxide. 
     
     
         47 . The thixotropy imparting composition of  claim 39 , wherein said diluent is one of the following: toluene, xylene, toluene, butyl Carbitol, N-methylpyrrolidone, butyl acetate, methyl ethyl ketone, and butanol, polyethylene oxides monoethers, polyethylene oxides monoethers, triglycerides, oils and high boiling alcohols. 
     
     
         48 . The non-aqueous system of  claim 39 , wherein said particulate material comprises one of the following: titanium dioxide, calcium carbonate, talc, alumina, layered silicates, fumed silica, pigments, and mixtures thereof.
