Abstract

An application for a metal faced roofing shingle includes a metal face affixed to a substrate, the substrate preferably being of similar size to existing asphalt roofing shingles. The metal faced roofing shingle includes a planar substrate and a metal face that covers less than an entire surface of the planar substrate. A decorative pattern covers an outside surface of the metal face or a part of the metal face, providing a look that, in some embodiments, simulates prior asphalt, wood, clay or stone roofing systems.

. The metal faced roofing shingle of claim 1 , wherein the planar substrate is flexible along the substrate thickness.

. The metal faced roofing shingle of claim 1 , wherein the planar substrate is made from a polyester fabric coated with asphalt.

. The metal faced roofing shingle of claim 1 , wherein the planar substrate is made from a glass fiber reinforced sheet sandwiched between two layers of a bituminous resin coating, the bituminous resin coating modified with synthetic resins.

. The metal faced roofing shingle of claim 1 , wherein the planar substrate is made of a wet laid non-woven fiberglass material on one side and a polyester fabric on the other side with an asphalt coating to bind and seal the polyester fabric to the wet laid non-woven fiberglass material.

. The metal faced roofing shingle of claim 1 , wherein the planar substrate is made of metal.

. The metal faced roofing shingle of claim 6 , wherein the metal is aluminum.

. The metal faced roofing shingle of claim 1 , wherein the metal face is made from a material selected from the group consisting of steel, aluminum and copper.

. The metal faced roofing shingle of claim 1 , further comprising a facade covering at least a portion of the outer surface of the metal face.

. A metal faced roofing shingle comprising:
a planar substrate, the planar substrate having a substrate face, a substrate back and substrate edges, the substrate having a substrate height, a substrate width and a substrate thickness, the substrate width being a width of the substrate face, the substrate height being a height of the substrate face and the substrate thickness being a thickness of the substrate edges; a metal face, the metal face having an outer surface, a back surface and edges, the metal face having a metal face height, a metal face width and a metal face thickness, the metal face width being a width of the outer surface, the metal face height being a height of the outer surface and the metal face thickness being a thickness of the edges; the back surface of the metal face is affixed to the substrate face whereas the metal face height is less than the substrate height; and a facade covering at least a portion of the outer surface of the metal face.

. The metal faced roofing shingle of claim 10 , wherein the planar substrate is flexible along the substrate thickness.

. The metal faced roofing shingle of claim 10 , wherein the planar substrate is made from a polyester fabric coated with asphalt.

. The metal faced roofing shingle of claim 10 , wherein the planar substrate is made from a glass fiber reinforced sheet sandwiched between two layers of a bituminous resin coating, the bituminous resin coating modified with synthetic resins.

. The metal faced roofing shingle of claim 10 , wherein the facade is etched into the outer surface of the metal face.

. The metal faced roofing shingle of claim 10 , wherein the facade is painted onto the outer surface of the metal face.

. The metal faced roofing shingle of claim 10 , wherein the facade is silk screened onto the outer surface of the metal face.

. The metal faced roofing shingle of claim 10 , further comprising a seal affixed to the substrate back.

. The metal faced roofing shingle of claim 17 , further comprising a removable cover removably affixed and covering the seal.
