Abstract

The invention relates to a pearl millet plant, seed, variety, parental line and hybrid. More specifically the invention relates to a pearl millet plant having a mutant allele that increases purple pigmentation in many plant parts. The invention relates to crossing inbreds, varieties, and hybrids containing the purple allele to produce novel types and hybrids of pearl millet and other compatible millet species, both for pigment extraction and ornamental purposes.

1 . A pearl millet seed containing a gene for the purple pigmentation trait designated PP3, wherein said PP3 allele is dominant and present in seed deposited under ATCC Accession No. PTA-9648. 
   
   
       2 . A pearl millet plant, or a part thereof, produced by growing the seed of  claim 1 . 
   
   
       3 . Pollen of the plant of  claim 2 . 
   
   
       4 . An ovule of the plant of  claim 2 . 
   
   
       5 . tissue culture comprising regenerable cells produced from the plant of  claim 2 . 
   
   
       6 . A protoplast produced from the tissue culture of  claim 5 . 
   
   
       7 . The tissue culture of  claim 5 , wherein cells of the tissue culture are produced from a plant part selected from the group consisting of kernel, head, stem, leaves, root, root tip, pollen, ovule, embryo and flower. 
   
   
       8 . A millet plant regenerated from the tissue culture of  claim 5 , said plant having all of the physiological and morphological characteristics of the millet plant of millet variety 53-1-1, representative seed of said variety having been deposited under ATCC Accession No. PTA-9648. 
   
   
       9 . A method for producing millet seed, comprising crossing the plant of  claim 2  with a different millet plant and harvesting the resulting seed. 
   
   
       10 . A plant produced by growing the resulting seed produced by the method of  claim 9 , wherein said plant has the purple pigmentation characteristics of a millet plant of millet variety 53-1-1, representative seed of said variety having been deposited under ATCC Accession No. PTA-9648. 
   
   
       11 . A millet plant, or part thereof, with purple pigmentation_produced by harvesting and growing the seed resulting from crossing the plant of  claim 10  with a different millet plant. 
   
   
       12 . A millet plant, or part thereof, having all the purple pigmentation characteristics and physiological and morphological characteristics of the variety 53-1-1, representative seed of said variety having been deposited under ATCC Accession No. PTA-9648. 
   
   
       13 . The seed of  claim 1 , further comprising a transgene. 
   
   
       14 . The seed of  claim 13 , wherein the transgene confers a trait selected from the group consisting of modified fatty acids, modified carbohydrate composition, decreased phytate content, herbicide resistance, insect resistance and disease resistance. 
   
   
       15 . The plant of  claim 2 , further comprising a transgene. 
   
   
       16 . The plant of  claim 15 , wherein the transgene confers a trait selected from the group consisting of modified fatty acids, modified carbohydrate composition, decreased phytate content, herbicide resistance, insect resistance and disease resistance. 
   
   
       17 . A method for producing F1 hybrid pearl millet seed comprising crossing a first pearl millet plant with a second pearl millet plant and harvesting the resultant F1 hybrid pearl millet seed, wherein said first or second pearl millet plant is the pearl millet plant of  claim 2 .
