Rapid I/O Traffic System

Abstract

High speed networking systems such as PCI-Express and Serial Rapid I/O are based on the exchange of packets across switched networks of high speed serial links. Information in the headers of these packets indicate the kind of transaction they represent. Queuing all received packets in a single queue will cause interactions between transaction types. Indirection can be used create the effect of multiple independent queues from a shared memory. This provides efficient centralized packet storage, while allowing independent processing of different transactions types.

1 . A method of Rapid I/O concurrent traffic management comprising the steps of:
 queuing only the packet headers to the logical units processing the transaction types supported;   storing the packet payload in a pool of packet buffers;   associating payload with headers using handles; and   storing payload and header handles in same address space.   
     
     
         2 . The method of Rapid I/O concurrent traffic management of  claim 1 , further comprising:
 storing packet headers in common memory; and   accessing packet headers indirectly using indirection handles.   found in said forward routing table.
