Abstract

The present invention relates to the field of viral disorders, and in particular to the use of natural compounds to inhibit viruses and viral infection. Compositions comprising NGNA are provided for treating or preventing viral infections, such as those causing the common cold.

1 . A composition for treating or preventing colds comprising an effective concentration of n-glycolylneuraminic acid formulated formulated as a pump spray, aerosol spray, gel, powder, lotion, foam or cream for topical or intranasal administration. 
     
     
         2 . The composition of  claim 1 , wherein said composition is a gel. 
     
     
         3 . The composition of  claim 1 , wherein said composition is an aqueous solution. 
     
     
         4 . The composition of  claim 1 , wherein said effective concentration is from about 1 nM to about 10 mM. 
     
     
         5 . A method for treating a human or animal subject comprising providing a composition comprising n-glycolylneuraminic acid in an effective concentration and administering said composition intranasally. 
     
     
         6 . The method of  claim 5 , wherein said composition is selected from the group consisting of gels, solutions, sprays, powders, creams, foams and lotions. 
     
     
         7 . The method of  claim 5 , wherein said effective concentration is from about 1 nM to about 10 mM. 
     
     
         8 . A method of inhibiting a virus comprising contacting said virus with an effective concentration of n-glycolylneuraminic acid, wherein said virus is selected from the group consisting of influenza viruses, rhinoviruses, adenoviruses, herpes viruses and noroviruses. 
     
     
         9 . The method of  claim 8 , wherein said effective concentration is from about 1 nM to about 10 mM. 
     
     
         10 . An animal feed comprising an effective concentration of n-glycolylneuraminic acid. 
     
     
         11 . A device comprising a solid support having NGNA deposited thereon, wherein said device is configured to cover a body cavity on an animal or human. 
     
     
         12 . A device for administering an antiviral solution comprising a container containing a solution comprising NGNA and a propellant. 
     
     
         13 . A method for treating a site suspected of being contaminated by rhinovirus comprising exposing said site to a composition comprising NGNA under conditions such that the percentage of viable or infectious rhinovirus is decreased. 
     
     
         14 . The method of  claim 13 , wherein said site is a surface. 
     
     
         15 . The method of  claim 13 , wherein said site in an enclosed space. 
     
     
         16 . The method of  claim 15 , wherein said enclosed space is a room. 
     
     
         17 . The method of  claim 13 , wherein said composition comprising NGNA is provided as an aerosol spray. 
     
     
         18 . The method of  claim 13 , wherein said composition comprising NGNA is provided as a foam. 
     
     
         19 . A method for treating or preventing flu in a human or animal subject comprising providing a composition comprising n-glycolylneuraminic acid in an effective concentration and administering said composition under conditions such that influenza virus is destroyed or inhibited. 
     
     
         20 . The method of  claim 19 , wherein said effective concentration is from about 1 nM to about 10 mM.
