Methods and Compositions for Treatment of Skin Conditions

Abstract

Topical skin care compositions are described that include effective amounts of anti-inflammatory, antioxidant, silica and sugar compounds. In addition, methods of treating skin conditions are described, which include applying topically to a site of treatment a therapeutically effective amount of a composition comprising anti-inflammatory, antioxidant, silica and sugar compounds.

1 . A topically administered composition for the prevention and treatment of skin conditions in a patient comprising:
 a sugar compound;   an antioxidant component in an amount sufficient to substantially inhibit the activity of collagenase and elastase;   a silica component in an amount sufficient to assist in the production of chondroitin and hyaluronic acid; and   an anti-inflammatory component in an amount effective to reduce inflammation of skin.   
     
     
         2 . The topical composition of  claim 1 , wherein the sugar compound is present in about 0.05 to 5% of the composition. 
     
     
         3 . The topical composition of  claim 1 , wherein the sugar compound comprises a glucosamine compound or salt or ester thereof, the antioxidant component comprises ascorbic acid compound or salt or ester thereof, the silica component is derived from bamboo extract, and the anti-inflammatory component is derived from licorice extract. 
     
     
         5 . The topical composition of  claim 1 , wherein the composition further comprises a pharmaceutically acceptable carrier or excipient. 
     
     
         6 . The topical composition of  claim 1 , further comprising one or more of thickener, humectant, moisturizing agent, humectant, emulsifying agent, preservative or pH balancer. 
     
     
         7 . A method for the prevention or treatment of a skin condition, wherein the skin has a thickness of dermis and collagen, which comprises the steps of:
 administering to a site of treatment in a subject in need thereof, a therapeutically effective amount of the composition of  claim 1 .   
     
     
         8 . The method of  claim 7 , wherein the skin condition prevented or treated is at least one of wrinkles or the appearance thereof, fine lines or the appearance thereof, thinning, reduced skin elasticity, reduced skin moisture, spider veins, senile purpura, sun damaged skin, aging skin, rough skin, atopic dermatitis, blepharitis, and seborrheic dermatitis. 
     
     
         9 . The method of  claim 7 , wherein the composition is administered in conjunction with concurrent or subsequent treatment by at least one additional pharmaceutical composition for the prevention or treatment of a skin condition. 
     
     
         10 . The method of  claim 7 , wherein the condition prevented or treated is at least one of sensitive eyes, blepharitis, rosacea or seborreheic dermatitis.
